Washington Senate Passes Bill That Would Keep Trump Off 2020 Ballots

Democrats are pulling out all the stops to keep Donald Trump from being re-elected in 2020, including now – individual State governments taking it upon themselves to decide for the people who should and shouldn’t be considered. The first step is to stop citizens from being able to vote for him at all, regardless of what their choice is.

It started off with the Colorado legislature voting to make it so their “electoral votes go to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of how their citizens actually voted,” according to The Hill: The state of Washington is trying to stop President Trump’s name from appearing on their ballots at all.

Washington’s state Senate passed a bill this week that would drop President Trump from the state’s 2020 presidential ballot until he releases his tax returns.

CBS News reported that the bill, which passed in a 28-21 vote and is headed to the state House for consideration, would require all presidential candidates who wish to appear on the ballot in the state to publicly release five years of tax returns before the state would allow them to appear on a primary or general election ballot.”

Those Democrats who are in support of the bill claim that it is important to do so as it will force all Presidential candidates to share their tax returns with the public.

“Although releasing tax returns has been the norm for about the last 40 years in presidential elections, unfortunately we’ve seen that norm broken,” stated Senator Patty Kuderer, the Democratic senator who sponsored the measure.

According to Republican lawmakers, the state could be setting themselves up for legal obstacles for trying to push rules “on a federal election.”

“We’re on really risky ground when we’re trying to place conditions on a federal election,” explained Republican Senator Hans Zeiger.

Similar bills have been proposed by other state legislatures, asking that candidates release their tax returns to the public.

Breitbart News reports:

New Jersey’s state senate passed a similar measure and is currently up for consideration in the state’s general assembly.

Democrats have been calling for Trump to release his tax returns since the 2016 election when Trump decided not to release his tax returns.

Trump said at the time that he had been under audit by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Since congressional Democrats took back the House, they have vowed to make Trump’s tax returns a subject of scrutiny.

While states generally have purview over elections, they can’t add to the qualifications of senators and congressional representatives as outlined in the Constitution. The question would be whether this would be considered as adding a qualification and whether it could apply to the President.

Republicans fought back against the measure saying that it was questionable to place such restrictions. “We’re on really risky ground when we’re trying to place conditions on a federal election,” said Sen. Hans Zeiger (R), according to CBS.

Washington isn’t the only state attempting to do this.

New Jersey and some dozen other states are also trying to do it, New Jersey’s effort is making its way through the legislature.
