‘I killed JonBenét Ramsey’ man claims in letters written from prison cited as part of the news story:

In another letter, Oliva wrote, ‘JonBenét completely changed me and removed all evil from me. Just one look at her beautiful face, her glowing beautiful skin, and her divine God-body, I realized I was wrong to kill other kids. Yet by accident she died and it was my fault.’

Oliva was one of the early suspects in the Ramsey case. The convicted sex offender lived close to the Ramsey home on the night of the murder. Police found a photo of Ramsey in his possession when he was arrested on other charges back in 2000. He also admitted to having an obsession with the child.

The beauty pageant star was found dead in the basement of her family’s home in Boulder in December 1996. A prosecutor cleared her parents and brother.

The Daily Mail laid out these bullet points about the JonBenét confession:
  • Gary Oliva, 54, has long been a suspect in the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, whose body was found at her home in Boulder, Colorado on December 26, 1996
  • In letters to high school classmate Michael Vail obtained by DailyMailTV, Oliva claims he killed JonBenét by accident
  • ‘I let JonBenét slip and her head bashed in half and I watched her die. It was an accident,’ he wrote from Limon Correctional Facility, Colorado
  • Oliva is serving a 10-year-sentence for possessing child pornography
  • When Oliva was arrested in 2016, police discovered he had 335 photos of JonBenét including photos from the six-year-old’s autopsy
  • Vail, 55, of Ventura, California, has urged police to charge Oliva for JonBenét’s death since Oliva is due for parole in 2020
  • Chillingly, Vail tells DailyMailTV that on December 26, 1996 Oliva told him: ‘I hurt a little girl’
Investigators believe several men were involved in the JonBenét murder and Vail hopes Oliva will identify them

A statement, issued by department spokeswoman Shannon Aulabaugh:

“The Boulder Police Department is aware of Mr. Oliva and has investigated his potential involvement in this case, including several previous confessions. The department routinely receives information on this investigation. Information provided to the police department is reviewed along with the many tips and theories we receive. There are no new updates in this investigation and the department will not comment further.”

However, in Boulder – the story is far less compelling: The Denver Post HEADLINE was simple and straight to the point:

Boulder police show little interest in report of pedophile’s alleged JonBenet Ramsey case confession

Oliva’s name has been linked to the Ramsey case numerous times over the years, including as far back as an in-depth piece broadcast about the case by the CBS program “48 Hours  Investigates” in October 2002.

Oliva, a previously convicted sex offender from Oregon who had traveled numerous times to Boulder, was targeted as deserving close scrutiny as a suspect by the late Lou Smit, the highly respected Colorado Springs homicide detective hired to assist the Boulder District Attorney’s Office in the star-crossed murder probe.

Smit became a staunch advocate of the Ramseys’ innocence and a proponent of the theory that an intruder came into their home to kill the girl. Smit continued to work the case on his own after splitting from the District Attorney’s Office, developing numerous alternate suspects in the case. Smit died in 2010, succumbing to cancer four years after Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet’s mother, met the same fate.

So did he do it? We may never know. Many are taking the BPD statement to mean they are ignoring this, however, that statement could also mean they are not ready to release what they are doing behind the scenes.

For the sake of the family, I hope this is it so that they can have closure. Let poor JonBenét rest in peace!
