Republican Justin Amash Calls For President Trump’s Impeachment – Receives Praise From Rashida Tlaib

Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) stirred up a political hornet’s nest on Friday when he came out and called for the impeachment of President Trump. A staunch Libertarian, many conservatives had admired Amash until he started sleeping with the enemy. He is the first Republican congressman to accuse President Trump of engaging in “impeachable conduct,” citing findings laid out in special counsel Robert Mueller’s report on now-debunked collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.

Amash has been very vocal against President Trump from the beginning of his presidency. Usually on what he considers Constitutional principles. This time he stepped way over the line siding with Democrats and sending out a series of tweets Saturday faulting both President Trump and Attorney General William Barr over Mueller’s report.

Per Breitbart, “Mueller wrapped the investigation and submitted his report to Barr in late March. Barr then released a summary of Mueller’s “principal conclusions” and released a redacted version of the report in April. In a summary to Congress, Barr said Team Mueller concluded that the Trump campaign did not collude with Russia. Further, the attorney general stated Mueller did not reach a conclusion on whether President Trump obstructed justice, stating that he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein determined that the president had not done so.”

Amash listed four conclusions that he had reached after due consideration and after carefully reading the redacted version of Mueller’s report, including that “President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct.” But he was in no way specific in citing his reasons per the report.

“Contrary to Barr’s portrayal, Mueller’s report reveals that President Trump engaged in specific actions and a pattern of behavior that meets the threshold for impeachment,” the congressman tweeted. He said the report “identifies multiple examples of conduct satisfying all the elements of obstruction of justice, and undoubtedly any person who is not the president of the United States would be indicted based on such evidence.”

Amash stopped short of calling Congress to actually begin impeachment proceedings against the president. But that is the only detail that differs him from the entire left on this issue now. The Democrats pounced on Amash’s tweets and are now using his words as propaganda in their political warfare against President Trump.

From Breitbart:

“President Trump and Republican lawmakers generally view the matter as “case closed,” as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, (R-KY) recently declared on the floor of the Senate. The president has repeatedly referred to the investigation as a witch hunt” and has declared “total exoneration” from any wrongdoing.

“On the other hand, Democrats who control the House are locked in a bitter standoff with the White House as it ignores lawmakers’ requests for the more complete version of Mueller’s report, the underlying evidence, and witness testimony. Some Democrats want the House to open impeachment hearings, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), has resisted, saying impeachment must be bipartisan.

“Rep. Rashida Tlaib, (D-MI), a freshman who opened her term by profanely calling for President Trump to be impeached, applauded Amash.

“You are putting country first, and that is to be commended,” Tlaib tweeted. Tlaib is seeking support for a resolution she’s circulating calling on the House to start impeachment proceedings.

“In contrast, Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel criticized Amash’s remarks, saying that it’s “sad to see Congressman Amash parroting the Democrats’ talking points on Russia.”

“The only people still fixated on the Russia collusion hoax are political foes of President Trump hoping to defeat him in 2020 by any desperate means possible,” added McDaniel. “Voters in Amash’s district strongly support this President, and would rather their Congressman work to support the President’s policies that have brought jobs, increased wages and made life better for Americans.”’

Amash is now facing intense backlash from his own party over his stance on impeachment. He, however, got plenty of praise from the Democrats, especially those such as Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar. Trump responded to Amash’s claims on Twitter Sunday by characterizing the conservative lawmaker as a “total lightweight” and “loser who sadly plays right into our opponents hands.”

Amash could very well find himself primaried over this. James Lower, a Representative of Michigan’s 70th District, stated the following: “This cannot go unchallenged! I support @realDonaldTrump, I support West Michigan values, I support our party’s values and I will have a major announcement regarding MI CD3 this week!” Veterans’ rights activist Tom Norton has already filed to challenge Amash as well.

Amash started talking about impeachment two years ago, over a memo from disgraced former FBI director James Comey that purportedly said Trump told Comey he hoped he could “let go” of the investigation of former national security adviser Mike Flynn, the Detroit Free Press reported. And in May 2017, Amash co-sponsored a Democratic bill calling for an independent investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election.

Amash joined Democrats in February by co-sponsoring a joint resolution to block Trump‘s emergency declaration seeking additional funds for a border wall. He also called Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh a “disappointing pick,” saying Trump’s choice would “take us backwards” on 4th Amendment issues.

Amash’s move here looks like a big PR stunt and it is meant to cause even more chaos in the Republican Party. However, I think it will backfire on him big time and cause Republicans to circle the wagons and support President Trump even more. Especially going into 2020 where Trump is expected to easily win a second term.

RedState put it best: “What Amash did is way too far though. If you are going to call for the impeachment of your own party’s President, then you better have evidence so airtight that no question can be raised. Given that he didn’t provide that, he has no business being in the caucus any longer. Go be a libertarian, along with all the glory that comes with that, and enjoy the plaudits from The Bulwark.”
