Ratings Crash For MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow After Mueller Report Destroys Her Conspiracy Theory
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow lost a half a million viewers in one week, and fell from 2nd place to 6th, after the Mueller report was released. The report indicated that he did not find any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Maddow has dedicated her show almost entirely to Russian Collusion for two years.
Meanwhile, her head-to-head competitor on Fox News Channel, Sean Hannity, saw his audience soar on Monday to 4 million viewers, a 32 percent increase from his average, doubling Maddows viewers.
According to The Daily Beast, Maddow’s show dropped 500,000 viewers in just one week after the Mueller report dropped.
“Maddow, who has consistently vied for the first or second top-rated cable news program, was sixth on Monday evening, down almost 500,000 total viewers from the previous Monday, as was MSNBC’s second top-rated program in prime-time, ‘The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell,’” The Daily Beast reported.
Hannity and Maddow have run neck-and-neck atop the cable news ratings this year, with Maddow having the slight edge.
Fox’s Tucker Carlson and Laura Ingraham also saw their audiences top their averages both days, while other prime-time hosts on MSNBC and CNN saw their audiences plunge.
Rachel Maddow isn’t backing away from her coverage of President Donald Trump and any connection to Russia’s involvement in trying to influence the 2016 presidential campaign.
Maddow devoted virtually all of Monday’s show to what she’s calling the “Barr Report,” listing a series of questions she wanted to pose. About half of Tuesday’s show was on the investigation.
The release of Barr’s summary letter threw a wrench into the narrative that has driven her coverage, but she doesn’t seem to comprehend that. Even left leaning Politico gets the big picture.
For the past two years, Rachel Maddow has been a hero of her own spy-thriller.
She has written, directed and starred in a hit production based on the unlikely premise of a prime-time cable TV show host unraveling the most dastardly plot in American history — one opening monologue at a time.
Only the story had a surprise twist at the end — she was completely wrong.
Few people invested more in the Russia probe, night after night, monologue after monologue, with an ever-building sense of anticipation.
It is perhaps unfair to say that Maddow believed in a conspiracy theory, although her theory was quite literally that there was a conspiracy between Donald Trump and the Russians, perhaps an ongoing one.
The Mueller probe was a real thing, and obviously newsworthy. Yet Maddow approached it with a notably conspiratorial cast of mind and style.
She covered the story with a consistent breathlessness. She took evident pleasure over even minor jail sentences for minor players. No proceeding related to the probe was too small for her long, involved explications. She did dramatic readings of courtroom transcripts.
Pervading it all was the sense that she could see the deeper forces behind the headlines, she could discern the pattern in all the dots, and you could, too, as long as you paid close enough attention to her program. The reward would be everything finally making sense from the 2016 presidential election to President Trump’s foreign policy — all traceable back to Russia and its sinister tentacles.
Rachel Maddow has created a high rated show, based on a total hoax. How many people will continue on? Who knows. Will she find another conspiracy and ride it out until the end? Maybe.
Whatever the case, she has lost a lot of credibility. No one dug a deeper hole into this conspiracy as did Rachel Maddow!
