President Trump to announce shutdown compromise: ‘Dreamers’ for Wall Funding? Will Pelosi-Schumer Reject and keep government shut down?
In an exclusive report from Axios.com, President Donald J. Trump plans to announce from from the Diplomatic Reception Room on Saturday afternoon a proposal to the month-long stand-off in the government shutdown. This according to people with advance knowledge of the speech.
In a nutshell, the President the offer will include the President’s $5.7 billion demand for wall funding in exchange for the BRIDGE Act. This would continue protecting undocumented aliens under the so-called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
It would also extend legislation on the legal status of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, according to Axios’ sources.
Is this Amnesty? You betcha’.
- Jared Kushner and Mike Pence have led the crafting of this deal and the negotiations with members, according to White House officials. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told reporters he had proposed the idea of a DACA-TPS swap to Trump in December, and that the president called it “interesting.”
The backdrop: A source privy to the negotiations told me the inflection point for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was the letter from Nancy Pelosi telling Trump not to deliver the State of the Union. McConnell had been saying all along that Pelosi and Trump needed to negotiate because one needed to put a bill on the House floor and one needed to sign it — two people with singular power.
- But after Pelosi’s letter, the source said, it became clear to McConnell she was “never going to get off her position and some other spark needed to happen.”
Well, Pelosi was never going to budge, the President isn’t budging and most think the Democrats won’t accept this Amnesty Wall deal anyway.
So much for the paid-vacation the government workers have been on. Now they’re really going to be angry. Yes, that’s right – they get all their back pay. When was the last time you were laid off and then got all your pay when you were rehired from when you sat at home?
Yeah – me either.
Standing by – come back in an hour – we’ll have an update
