President Trump Breaks Mexico And Halts Tariffs… Forces Them To Take Action Against Illegal Immigration

President Trump stood his ground on slapping Mexico with tariffs if they did not stem the illegal immigrant invasion coming across our southern border and in a high-stakes game of El Pollo Loco, Mexico blinked and caved. Trump announced late yesterday that the US has reached a new agreement with Mexico and that they are going to take “strong measures” to end the flow of illegal immigration into the United States. They will now avoid being hit with massive tariffs by the Trump administration.

“I am pleased to inform you that The United States of America has reached a signed agreement with Mexico. The Tariffs scheduled to be implemented by the U.S. on Monday, against Mexico, are hereby indefinitely suspended,” Trump tweeted. “Mexico, in turn, has agreed to take strong measures to stem the tide of Migration through Mexico, and to our Southern Border. This is being done to greatly reduce, or eliminate, Illegal Immigration coming from Mexico and into the United States. Details of the agreement will be released shortly by the State Department. Thank you!”

Last week, Trump was blunt: “On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP,” Trump tweeted. “The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied, at which time the Tariffs will be removed. Details from the White House to follow.” Many doubted Trump but he didn’t budge over it. Even with threats from his own party mind you.

Trump said the 5 percent tariff on Mexico would increase by 5 percent every month that Mexico did not stop illegal immigrants from swarming across our border. Tariffs would have maxed out at 25 percent. That would have decimated Mexico’s economy.

Here is what Trump had to say on all this and he would have made good on his threats had Mexico not given in:

“To address the emergency at the Southern Border, I am invoking the authorities granted to me by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Accordingly, starting on June 10, 2019, the United States will impose a 5 percent Tariff on all goods imported from Mexico. If the illegal migration crisis is alleviated through effective actions taken by Mexico, to be determined in our sole discretion and judgment, the Tariffs will be removed. If the crisis persists, however, the Tariffs will be raised to 10 percent on July 1, 2019. Similarly, if Mexico still has not taken action to dramatically reduce or eliminate the number of illegal aliens crossing its territory into the United States, Tariffs will be increased to 15 percent on August 1, 2019, to 20 percent on September 1, 2019, and to 25 percent on October 1, 2019. Tariffs will permanently remain at the 25 percent level unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory. Workers who come to our country through the legal admissions process, including those working on farms, ranches, and in other businesses, will be allowed easy passage.

“If Mexico fails to act, Tariffs will remain at the high level, and companies located in Mexico may start moving back to the United States to make their products and goods. Companies that relocate to the United States will not pay the Tariffs or be affected in any way.

“Over the years, Mexico has made massive amounts of money in its dealings with the United States, and this includes the tremendous number of jobs leaving our country.

“Should Mexico choose not to cooperate on reducing unlawful migration, the sustained imposition of Tariffs will produce a massive return of jobs back to American cities and towns. Remember, our great country has been the “piggy bank” from which everybody wants only to TAKE. The difference is that now we are firmly and forcefully standing up for America’s interests.”

Mexican authorities have reportedly offered to deploy 6,000 members of the Mexican National Guard to the nation’s southern border with Guatemala. The Mexicans have maintained that this would be crucial in preventing the massive ‘caravan’ formations of Central Americans from entering their country with the hopes of making it to the United States.

Mexico is also allegedly willing to make a “safe third country” agreement with the United States. Under such an agreement, which the United States already has with Canada, asylum seekers would be obligated to file an asylum claim in the first country they’ve reached since leaving their homeland. This would force Central Americans to file asylum claims in Mexico, provided it’s the first nation they’ve reached since leaving their country of origin.

From TheBlaze:

“The state department released a joint declaration Friday evening, which says “Mexico will take unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, to include the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.”

“All migrants who cross into the U.S. seeking asylum will be “rapidly” returned to Mexico to await adjudication of their case, and Mexico will authorize that re-entry and accommodate them as they wait, offering jobs, healthcare, and education.”

This could mean an end to ‘catch-and-release’ of Central American migrants. Instead of catch-and-release, the migrants would be returned to Mexico until their asylum claims can be heard by a judge. It would also help defund the drug cartels. As Breitbart put it: “The end of catch-and-release will likely wreck the cartels’ labor-trafficking business, which depends on migrants getting U.S. jobs to repay their smuggling debts. Few poor people in Honduras, El Salvador, or Guatemala will go into debt with the cartels, or mortgage their farms and homes to the cartels, once they know they will be forced to remain in Mexico prior to their asylum hearings.”

All of this is historic if, and I repeat ‘if’, Mexico keeps its word and does what it says it will do in regards to illegal immigration. This will in no way remove the need for a wall and security on the border… in fact, this is the point that those efforts should be ramped up big time.

It’s sad that if Mexico does what she says she will, Mexico will in effect be doing more to stop illegal immigration than the Democrats are. Instead, the Democratic-controlled House passed a massive Amnesty bill for illegal immigrants. It’s clear who has America’s best interests at heart here and it’s not the left.
