Party On, Old Dudes! ‘Bill & Ted 3’ Is Coming To A Theater Near You! Ex-cel-lent!
If you weren’t born in the last millennium, you really won’t get it, but Bill and Ted, the Wyld Stallyns will make a most bodacious return next year. On Wednesday, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter revealed that the long-rumored third Bill & Ted movie will officially start shooting this summer. The excellent adventure already has a release date.
In an Extremely Pure announcement video, Reeves and Winter joined up in front of the Hollywood Bowl in LA. They used the occasion to announce that Bill & Ted 3, called Bill & Ted Face the Music, is going into production soon and is slated to hit theaters in August 2020.
The franchise’s creators, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, gave some details on the film’s plot last year, when they were first teasing Face the Music. “At 16, you’re told you’re going to save the world, and now you’re 50, and you haven’t done it,” Matheson told PEOPLE.
“It affects their marriages and it affects their relationships with their kids and it affects their everything. And then the future actually shows up and is like, ‘You’ve got to do it right now.'”
“It’s kind of like A Christmas Carol with Bill and Ted,” Solomon said.
For those of you born in the 21st Century, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure was a 1989 American science fiction comedy film involving Bill (Alex Winter) and Ted (Keanu Reeves) who were high school buddies starting a band. However, they were about to fail their history class, which meant Ted would be sent to military school.
They received help from Rufus (George Carlin), a traveler from a future where their band is the foundation for a perfect society. With the use of Rufus’ time machine, Bill and Ted traveled to various points in history, returning with important figures to help them complete their final history presentation.
A theatrical sequel, Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey, was released in 1991.
The franchise sent a generation of kids into the world using phrases and words such as “Party On, Dude!”, “Bodacious!” and “Ex-cel-lent!”
The franchise also inserted some amazing historical characters back in the minds of that generation. Napoleon Bonaparte, Billy the Kid, Socrates, Sigmund Freud, Genghis Khan, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, and Ludwig van Beethoven were all supporting characters in the hilarious comedy.
Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure grossed $40.4 million domestically on a budget of about $10 million. Of course, as often happens, it was panned by the critics and loved by a generation.
Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure was selected, however, as number 8 in Rolling Stone’s ’10 Best Stoner Movies of All Time’ in 2013! Bodacious!
Winters and Reeves have been talking about wanting to do a third Bill & Ted movie for years. Each have had successful careers after the franchise. Reeves continued to headline successful movies and Winters continued working mostly as a documentary director.
“We want to say thank you to you, our fans,” Reeves says, looking significantly older and more bearded than the last time we saw Ted. “It looks like we might—”
“Actually,” Winter cuts in.
“Hopefully,” Reeves says.
“Make a movie this summer!” Winter says. Classic!
Bill & Ted Face the Music is due out on August 21, 2020. Until then, be excellent to each other. This one should definitely be worth the wait.
