Politico reports that Barack Obama has been having a series of private meetings about 2020. In one of those meetings, Obama said that his former VP likely won’t win the nomination, claiming, ‘You know who really doesn’t have it? Joe Biden’. Many have been asking why Obama has not endorsed his former VP, and now we may know why!
Reports are that it was actually another 2020 Democratic Presidential candidate that Obama made the remarks to.
Obama has been oddly quiet during the 2019 portion of the Democrat Primary campaign, but he has met privately with many of the candidates, as well as their staffs and other Democrat VIPs.
It was in one of these meetings where Obama took this harsh dig at his own former vice president, according to Politico.
“With one candidate, he pointed out that during his own 2008 campaign, he had an intimate bond with the electorate, especially in Iowa, that he no longer has. Then he added, ‘And you know who really doesn’t have it? Joe Biden,'” Ryan Lizza reported.
Ostensibly the meetings are for the aspiring candidates to gain some wisdom from the last Democrat to win an open presidential primary and the presidency, but they also allow Obama to collect his own intelligence about what he and his closest advisers have made clear is all that matters to him: who can beat Donald Trump.
Sometimes he offers candid advice about his visitors’ strengths and weaknesses. With several lesser-known candidates, according to people who have talked to him or been briefed on his meetings, he was blunt about the challenges of breaking out of a large field. His advice is not always heeded. He told Patrick earlier this year that it was likely “too late” for him to secure “money and talent” if he jumped in the race. Occasionally, he can be cutting. With one candidate, he pointed out that during his own 2008 campaign, he had an intimate bond with the electorate, especially in Iowa, that he no longer has. Then he added, “And you know who really doesn’t have it? Joe Biden.”
Biden has repeatedly been asked, and responded to the lack of an Obama endorsement, always stating that he believed that the primary winner “should win it on their own merits.” Biden has said that he personally told Obama to not endorse him.
Yet, Biden has often brought up Obama’s name on the campaign trail, reminding voters of what he perceives as victories and accomplishments, especially with healthcare and the economy. But the former VP has taken major heat from his rivals as he has used the Obama record when it was good and then distanced himself from it when it was not favorable.
You know, when he is good, he is my kid, when he is not, he is your kid!
There are only two candidates that Obama knows on a more personal level: Joe Biden and former Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, who entered the primary race earlier this month.
That begs the question! Did Barack Obama privately push Deval towards a run and was he the ‘other’ candidate that was told that ‘Joe doesn’t really have it’? Was this information leaked to help Deval and destroy Biden?
I really don’t give Joe Biden too much of a chance either at this point.
Biden is polling 4th place in Iowa. When you consider Biden is the only candidate in the top six that is not running a true grassroots campaign, he could easily place 5th in the first caucus. A 4th or 5th place in Iowa would be a catastrophe for his campaign, significantly drying up resources and destroying momentum. Biden is doing pretty well in North Carolina and Nevada, but that could easily change with a perfect storm of a catastrophe in Iowa and losing votes over time to Deval and or Bloomberg.
Biden’s campaign has been mediocre at best with, as we knew would happen, numerous gaffes. His fundraising is dismal and he has been spending more on the campaign trail than he is bringing in.
His only real positive is a perception that he is the only one who can beat President Trump, which is sincerely not enough to overcome obstacles.
Of course, there is ALSO the Senate investigation into the dealings of Biden, his son Hunter, Burisma and the Ukraine…
We will see! Just keep the popcorn coming in great big bags!
