Nebraska State Senator Compares American Flag To Nazi Swastika: ‘It’s A Rag’

Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers (I) has gone off the deep end politically again. He called the American flag a ‘rag’ and then compared it to the Nazi swastika. This guy is 81-years-old and he has been in office since 1971. They keep reelecting him in Nebraska. Mull that over. He made his comments last Tuesday while speaking out against a state bill that would update civics requirements for students. Its aim is to make students more literate in “knowledge in civics, history, economics, financial literacy, and geography.” LB 399’s intention is to cultivate “competent, responsible, patriotic, and civil American citizens” in the Cornhusker State.

Chambers, who does not support the bill because it reportedly teaches only one version of history, burst out in rage over having to respect the American flag. “Senator Groene wants to talk about the meaning of respect,” Mr. Chambers said Tuesday. “What do white people mean by it and what do black people mean by it? White people mean we’ve gotta bow down to what they tell us as black people to bow down to. I don’t come here for this rag every day, and it’s a rag. That’s all it is to me. When you show a way to persuade Jews to sanctify and worship the swastika — when you show me that I’ll come up here and stand while you all hypocritically pretend that rag is something that it definitely is not.” He disrespected the American flag and mocked Jews all in one statement. Et tu, Nebraska?

State Sen. Tom Brewer (R) blew up over Chambers’ remarks and understandably so. He served over 30 years in the military. Brewer introduced a different bill regarding military recruiters, sharing what the flag means to veterans and military families.

“I think I speak for most of us that have worn the uniform, it rips our heart out to hear someone say that they refer to the flag as a rag,” Brewer said. “Because for those of us that have brought home those that we’ve lost, it’s hard to ever refer to the flag as a rag because you have to fold it and you have to get it to the parents, and that’s awful hard to do.”

And imagine how those of the Jewish faith feel after having the suffering of millions in the holocaust mocked by this man as well. The lawmaker who introduced the civics bill, state Sen. Julie Slama, also slammed Chambers. “Sen. Chambers’ comments not only degrade a symbol of ultimate sacrifice for our nation, but they also minimize the horrors and millions of lives lost in the Holocaust,” Slama said.

Chambers is the longest-serving state senator out there. He has represented Omaha since he came into office in 1971. He made national headlines in 2007 for filing a lawsuit against God over natural disasters. In 2015, Chambers compared police officers to ISIS. So this is nothing out of line for him and yet, he’s still in office. He is a registered Independent and part of Nebraska’s nonpartisan unicameral legislature and refers to himself as “the defender of the downtrodden.”

And by the way, this isn’t the first time he has compared the flag to the swastika. Chambers freely admits that. His political career was borne out of the violent 1966 riots and he just gets more and more radical every year.
