If you believed in the liberal mainstream media, you would think that Republicans are the devil worshippers. Liberal outlets conveniently like to not report on major positive developments for Republican politicians. Like this latest story.

Republican Michigan Governor Rick Snyder just signed several pieces of legislation that will increase the punishment for people who perform female genital mutilation.

Snyder signed a total of 13 bills that have now become law. One of those bills specifically designates female genital mutilation as a felony that is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. As well, the bills will permanently revoke the medical licenses of doctors who partake in these procedures. The statute of limitations is upped to ten years which allows victims to file civil lawsuits and seek damages.

One of the bills reads,

It is not a defense to prosecution under this section that the person on whom the operation is performed, or any other person, believes that the operation is required as a matter of custom or ritual, or that the person on whom the operation is performed, or that person’s parent or guardian, consented to the operation.”

Snyder told the Detroit Free Press the following about his decision,

“Those who commit these horrendous crimes should be held accountable for their actions, and these bills stiffen the penalties for offenders while providing additional support to victims. This legislation is an important step toward eliminating this despicable practice in Michigan while empowering victims to find healing and justice.”

One sponsor of the bill Republican Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker told the Associated Press the following about the legislation,

This barbaric procedure has no accepted health benefits and is only performed to exercise control over young women. We owe it to our girls to give law enforcement and prosecutors every available tool to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

While there is a federal law that prohibits this practice, this state law will stiffen the penalties for those who commit these egregious crimes. Under federal law female genital mutilation is only punishable up to five years in prison.

This is a good, strong step in the right direction given the prevalence of this practice. In light of this new legislation, Michigan has become the 26th state that has laws banning female genital mutilation. Now that the bills have been signed the laws will go into effect starting in October.

These bills came to fruition after cases of female genital mutilation became known to the public. Federal Prosecutors arrested and charged two doctors, as well as, a doctor’s wife in Detroit for reportedly performing the cutting procedure on girls that were younger than seven years old.

These cases specifically took place in a town called Livonia, Michigan and it was Dr. Jumana Nagarwala who performed the surgery. She was formally charged and arrested on April 13th of this year.

The second batch of people arrested was Dr. Fakhruddin Attar and his wife Farida Attar who was arrested the week after Dr. Nagarwala. They were all found to be co-conspirators in the crime.

The World Health Organization has released reports indicating that female genital mutilation is somewhat of a common practice among certain Muslim sects of communities in Africa, the Middle East, and various parts of Asia.

It is involved with religious rituals that include cutting out parts of the female genitalia. The superstition regarding the practice is founded on the idea that the mutilation will discourage women from seeking sex outside of marriage.

The surgical procedure is rather grotesque. It involves removing part of the clitoris and the clitoral hood with the hope of diminishing a woman’s sexuality. Despite the fact that Muslim traditions involve this procedure there are no religious texts that require this procedure. There is no evidence to indicate this surgery reduces a woman’s libido or leads to more marital fidelity and premarital virginity.

This is the United States of America! This type of human rights abuse is unacceptable and will not be tolerated!

While female genital mutilation may be allowed in other parts of the world it certainly is not here. The state of Michigan did right by the American people by leading legislation in the right direction. The American people should be proud of Governor Snyder.
