Mariano Rivera: I AM Proud to be an American and English is the FIRST Thing Immigrants Should Learn!
Arguably the greatest Major League Baseball pitcher of all time, Mariano Rivera, was proud to claim that he was very proud to be an American as President Trump honored the Yankee with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday. The pitcher made the statement while telling how difficult it was during the early days of his career when he spoke very little English.
Rivera also stated that he only became “the happiest man in baseball” after he was able to finally learn English so that he was able to to effectively communicate with his teammates and managers.
“I’m proud to be an American,” Rivera said as the president bestowed the award.
“So, yes, learning English is the first thing that we should do,” Rivera said to immigrants to this country.
Rivera recounted his struggle to learn English from his teammates.
“I said, I don’t care how much you laugh. I don’t care how much you make fun of me, but please, I give you permission to laugh and to do that, but teach me,” he said.
“Being American,” Rivera concluded, “I’m so proud and honored that coming from a small, beautiful country called Panama, and live with my family here, and understand the language, and everything that we go through, I’m proud to be an American.”
Trump and Rivera made quite an entrance.
They walked out to Rivera’s theme from his playing days: “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. Trump then praised Rivera as “maybe the greatest pitcher of all time.”
“There’s a big argument, is he the greatest pitcher or the greatest reliever?” The President presented.
The President also explained Rivera’s entrance music to the gathered crowd. “Because he put the batter to sleep,” Trump said. “A lot of people don’t know that, but the Yankee fans know that.”
Mariano Rivera is a Panamanian-American former professional baseball pitcher who played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball for the New York Yankees, from 1995 to 2013. Nicknamed “Sandman”, he spent most of his career as a relief pitcher and served as the Yankees’ closer for 17 seasons.
Rivera is the MLB’s all-time leader in saves with 652 in his career, more than 200 more than any current active player. He won five World Series championships in his career with the Yankees and in 2019 became the first player unanimously voted into the Hall of Fame.
“Mariano broke the Major League record for the most games finished and saves made,” Trump said. “He is the most dominant relief pitcher in the history of baseball and more than that, he has lived the American dream and shines as an example of American greatness for all to see.”
“In 1998, 1999 and 2000 World Series championships, Mariano closed out three consecutive World Series victories and delivered 14 strikeouts and seven saves,” Trump said.
Rivera was also recognized for his community service and his Mariano Rivera Foundation.
“All I do is try to do the best and do the best for America,” Rivera said.
Rivera defended his support for President Donald Trump earlier this summer, after an editorial on Sunday accused the former New York Yankees great of having “served at the pleasure of a racist president.”
Appearing on Fox News, Rivera emphasized his Christian faith and his solidarity with President Trump on issues such as the state of Israel.
“He was a friend of mine before he became president,” Rivera said on “Fox & Friends.” “So, because he’s president I will turn my back on him? No. I respect him.
“I respect what he does and I believe he’s doing the best for the United States of America.”
We all love a great success story! This country was founded by immigrants and our history books would be rather small without them! Mariano Rivera is the ultimate example of an immigrant who came here to work hard and make the most of the American Dream! So very proud of that!
