Broward Student in Florida Presents Damning Evidence Against Board For Neglecting Safety

Just who's fault is this?

Broward County student journalist Kenneth Preston has just published an in-depth report that reveals damning evidence proving Broward County school officials were negligent regarding school security in the years leading up to the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. They immediately labeled his findings as fake news.

The report also refutes the left’s claims that guns, specifically the AR-15, are to blame for the massacre. The killing was due to a violent psychopathic former student who was ignored by the school system and by the school not implementing safety measures that were paid for.

Preston did excellent research here. In 2014, an $800 million bond was allocated to Broward County Public Schools, with more than $100 million earmarked directly for school safety. However, many of the planned safety upgrades to county schools were delayed due to concerns over costs. Only $5,584,512 of an allotted $104,325,821 budget for school safety has been used. That’s about 5 percent. Not using those funds as needed resulted in the high cost of lives at the school.

One of the measures would have improved their fire system by installing a feature “that allows a delay to determine if there’s an actual fire before the alarm triggers,” according to Preston. It involves a three-minute delay. The shooter triggered the fire alarm so that students would run into the halls and get shot. If the feature had been implemented, it would have been determined there was no real fire and the kids would not have run into a shooting gallery the way they did. Lives would have definitely been saved with this safety feature.

Even worse here was the progressive implementation of Obama-era school behavioral programs. The Promise Program and the Behavior Intervention Program both allowed troubled, violent students such as this shooter to escape punishment and ultimately kill students. This is what happens when you blindly apply leftist diktats instead of doing your job which is to proactively protect students. The school board’s embrace of progressive programs, Preston maintains, has protected problem students — like the student who eventually slaughtered 17 people — shielding them from effective disciplinary measures and thus allowing them to remain threats to their peers.

“After weeks of research, searching through thousands of pages of government documents, and speaking with dozens of officials, I have come to the conclusion that Superintendent Runcie and members of the school board have failed at their essential role in keeping our students safe. Whether that’s because of incompetence or the incentive of federal dollars is for you to decide,” Preston wrote in an article outlining his findings. “Ultimately, no matter what laws pass, the extent, or how infrequent these shootings become, if the people who were complicit in facilitating an environment in which something like this could occur don’t face consequences, then there is no justice,” he wrote.

“Instead of addressing our concerns,” Preston said, “they prevented us from speaking.” From The Daily Signal:

Preston spoke at a Broward County School Board meeting on Tuesday, but said during his remarks that just before the meeting started, his allotted time to speak was cut to three minutes.

The seven panelists Preston had lined up were removed from the schedule.

On the day before the hearing, Preston said he was forced to attend a two-hour meeting with the superintendent and the families of the victims to discuss his report.

“I was denied the right to have an attorney present. I was refused the opportunity to record the meeting, and I was told this was because the superintendent wouldn’t have any representation of his own,” Preston said.

He said that when he arrived at the meeting, it was “stacked with 10 district officials in addition to the superintendent.”

Preston continued: “It makes me wonder how committed to transparency and truth you are when I was denied the right to have an attorney present as well as the opportunity to record the meeting while the superi
ntendent was allowed to bring 10 district officials who work for him and attempt to re-educate me.”

“Something doesn’t smell quite right in Broward, and this school district is the epicenter,” Preston said.

And police officers say they knew this would happen. “I’m sorry to say, but we all knew some sort of tragedy like this was going to happen in Broward,” a veteran Broward County sheriff’s deputy said. “You can’t just stop arresting kids and send kids straight from juvie back into schools without expecting something like this. As officers, our hands were tied… the decisions were political ones, not well researched or backed by evidence, just follow the money,” he continued. “If they really wanted to know what worked, they would’ve asked us the officers.”

As I said before, when Preston presented his findings, superintendent Robert Runcie called his meticulously sourced investigation fake news. “Superintendent Runcie called an article referencing this report ‘fake news’ and recommended anyone interested in facts should look to Florida TaxWatch, an independent organization tasked with overseeing the distribution of the money. I reached out to Florida Taxwatch, and Vice President of Research Robert Nave has told me that my numbers are correct,” Preston wrote in his article. Runcie once worked under former Obama Secretary of Education Arne Duncan in the Chicago Public Schools system, so that explains an awful lot.

It’s obvious Preston’s research is correct and Runcie is trying to cover his own butt here. A 19 year-old just exposed these bureaucratic fools for the incompetent boobs they really are and they can’t stand that. It’s a thorough, damning representation of incompetence and malfeasance. It destroys their political agenda of gun control and putting the blame on the NRA. It took a student to do the work to expose all this. The superintendent, the sheriff and a whole bunch of people on the school board and in positions of power in the school district should be immediately fired. This is the student people should be listening to… not the hand-selected child mouth pieces spouting gun control.
