BREAKING: U.S. House Votes to Ban Abortions After 20 Weeks!

The House on Tuesday passed a bill to ban abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, a top priority of the anti-abortion movement.

Some, unfortunately feel the measure will die in the Senate. Similar legislation passed the House in 2015, but the measure was then blocked in the U.S. Senate.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), would make it a crime to perform or attempt an abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, with the possibility of a fine, up to five years in prison or both.

The measure passed heavily along party lines, 237-189.

Rep. Franks, who announced last month that the bill would go to the floor for a vote, said Democrats and Republicans should unite on a bill that provides a “bare minimum” protection for children.

“We can all agree a 20-week-old fetus who feels the torturous pain of being slashed, or cut in two, should not be killed,” Franks wrote.

CNN reports:

“The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which is similar to legislation that failed in 2013 and 2015, has support from the White House this time around.
The divisive issue of abortion has once again been brought to the forefront of national conversations since President Donald Trump assumed office. Trump issued support for the bill even before he won the election. In a letter dated September 2016 that was sent to anti-abortion leaders inviting individuals to join the campaign’s “Pro-Life Coalition,” Trump said he was committed to “signing into law the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which would end painful late-term abortions nationwide,” as one of four points.
The White House reiterated its support in a statement of administration policy issued Monday: “The administration strongly supports H.R. 36, the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections.””

The legislation is likely to face a tough sell in the Senate. With only a 52-seat majority it would be unlikely Senate Republicans could gather the 60 votes needed to move the legislation to President Trump’s desk.

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Tuesday he would reintroduce a companion bill in the Senate soon.

The White House said Monday that it “strongly supports” the bill and “applauds the House of Representatives for continuing its efforts to secure critical pro-life protections.”

The bill is a top priority of anti-abortion groups, which argue a fetus can feel pain at 20 weeks gestation and later.

“It’s past time for Congress to pass a nationwide law protecting unborn children from the unspeakable cruelty of late-term abortion,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List, an anti-abortion group in D.C.

Abortion rights groups, however, have condemned the bill.

“The agenda behind this bill is clear: to shame women and to ban safe, legal abortion,” said Dana Singiser, Vice President for Government Relations and Public Policy for Planned Parenthood.

Currently, abortions are legal nationwide until a fetus is viable outside the womb, but states can enact laws to limit the procedure.

The Pro-Life movement is winning the hearts and minds for some time now.
