Today, in Ohio, Donald Trump announced that General James ‘Mad Dog’ Mattis would be his Secretary of Defense. James Mattis is a retired U.S. Marine Corps general with a dream resume that includes experience spanning from the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan, and Iraq, to the U.S. Joint Forces and Central Command. He is as, Trump says, “a True General’s General”.
Trump met with General Mattis about a week ago at the residence off the President-elect’s golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey. Trump told reporters “All I can say is he is the REAL DEAL!…brilliant, wonderful man.”
The retired 4-star Marine Corps general has said “it’s fun to shoot some people”. The addition of Mattis to Trump’s cabinet signals a return to a more aggressive defense.
Mattis led a task force into Afghanistan and the 1st Marine Division in the invasion of Iraq. He reportedly was often at odds with military superiors and the Obama administration with his advocacy for a tougher approach on Iran.
Mattis still needs a waiver from Congress from the rule barring military officers from accepting a post requiring Senate confirmation for seven years after retirement, but that should be no problem. Sen. John McCain, an Arizona Republican and chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, who would preside over hearings on a defense secretary nominee is a fan of General Mattis.
“I’m a great admirer of Gen. Mattis,” …A Mattis nomination “would require a waiver, but that has happened in the past.”
“I think one of the reasons why it would be good to have him is that he has recent combat experience in both theaters (Iraq and Afghanistan). So he really understands complex situations on the ground.”
Mattis has made many comments criticizing the Obama administration from innocuous details to things as dire as failing to prepare to battle an expansionist Iran.
‘The international order… is not self sustaining. It demands tending by an America that leads wisely, standing unapologetically… in defense of our values,’ Mattis said.
His fellow Marines have lauded him as a ‘warrior monk’ and at one point he was poised to run against Trump as the nominee for president.
Those who have worked with him say he’s a straight shooter known for his salty language, often referred to as ‘Mattisisms’.
Here’s a few:
- Speaking to tribal leaders in Iraq: “I come in peace. I didn’t bring artillery. But I’m pleading with you, with tears in my eyes: If you f— with me, I’ll kill you all.”
- Advice to soldiers and Marines: “Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.” Also: “If I were to sum up what I’ve learned in 35 years of service, it’s improvise, improvise, improvise.” And: “You are part of the world’s most feared and trusted force. Engage your brain before you engage your weapon.” Similarly: “An untrained or uneducated Marine . . . deployed to the combat zone is a bigger threat to mission accomplishment . . . than the enemy.”
- Psychological counseling: “The first time you blow someone away is not an insignificant event.”
H/T Washington Post:
President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he has chosen retired Marine Gen. James N. Mattis, who has said that responding to “political Islam” is the major security issue facing the United States, to be Secretary of defense.
“We are going to appoint Mad Dog Mattis as our secretary of defense,” Trump told a rally in Cincinnati, the first stop on a post-election “thank-you tour.”
Trump joked that the media and audience should keep the news to themselves. “We are going to be announcing him Monday of next week,” Trump said. “Keep it inside the room.”
Here’s the video from Fox News:
What an AWESOME addition to Trump’s administration. Just like Trump, Gen. Mattis is a “straight shooter”. Certainly we can and will all appreciate that, especially after the 8 years of the Obama administration. I have no doubt that Gen. Mattis was most likely forced out of his command by President Obama, just like so many other good military men. Obama never wanted to win the war against ISIS.
Trump on the other hand, will restore our military to greatness. Peace through strength will return. America’s military will once again be respected by other countries around the world. Gen. Mattis is a YUGE step in the right direction for a stronger and safer America.
There’s a new sheriff in town and it’s time to kick some ISIS butt!
