One would think that given the radical change in policy from the former administration to the current administration in terms of border patrol and immigration that agents love the President. But it seems that after some members spoke out in the media they have indicated they might not prefer the President after all.

U.S. Border Patrol has over 18,000 men and women who are employed by them across the country. One agent recently spoke with Breitbart News and said that it was Senator Ted Cruz of Texas who has been their biggest advocate in Washington, D.C with other lawmakers.

Border Patrol Agent Brandon Judd who is President of the National Border Patrol Council said the following during a C-SPAN interview on July 17th,

“We have to have an advocate in Congress, which I believe is Ted Cruz. If you look at the ideas [Cruz] has come up with, he is talking about illicit traffic. This is a huge drug problem. The opioids flowing across the southwest border right now. What Ted Cruz has proposed is any funds that are seized through illicit traffic from El Chapo would then go toward the border wall. That’s ingenious. It is the outside of the box thinking that I think we need in Congress.”

He emphasized that innovative ideas such as Cruz’s are the key to combatting this systemic issue that was worsened during the Obama administration because of his progressive policies. Judd made a point to note that Cruz’s ideas would ensure that there was not an undue burden placed on American taxpayers.

The bill, in particular, is called the “Ensuring Lawful Collection of Hidden Assets to Provide Order” bill. In a press statement concerning this newly minted bill brought before the Senate he said,

“The U.S. Government is currently seeking the criminal forfeiture of more than $14 billion in drug proceeds and illicit profits from El Chapo, the former leader of the Sinaloa drug cartel who was recently extradited to the U.S. to face criminal prosecution for numerous alleged drug-related crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering.”

In reference to the El Chapo bill, Judd said the following,

“If that bill does pass, then we alleviate the tax burden on the taxpayers and we are able to build the wall in a manner that I think is ingenious. If we want to think outside the box, we are going to have to support people like Ted Cruz, who came up with an ideal that allows us to build a wall without taxpayer funds.”

Cracking down on illegal immigration has been a focal policy of the Trump administration and we certainly expect it to continue. Border patrol is a key part of this fight. As well as the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency. Border crossings, illegal immigration, violent illegal alien crimes, as well as illicit drug trafficking are just a few of the myriad of issues we have had to deal with the fallout of because of the Obama administration.

One key part of cracking down on illegal immigration is ensuring there is not an incentive to come here illegally. However, due to the large need for cheap labor in the agricultural sector, this makes it very difficult. Jeronimo Cortina who is a professor, as well as research associate at the University of Houston’s Center for Public Policy, said the following about the problem,

The real tragedy, is that deaths like those in this case are going to be happening again and again, or even more if we don’t tackle the root of the problem. It’s a market rule, and it’s not going to change just because you put up more walls. And since there aren’t efficient legal mechanisms to deal with this offer-demand cycles, the law of the market is fulfilled instead in the realm of the” black market.”

But Cruz’s work to funnel in money from the illicit drug trade into the border wall funding is a good start towards sending a message that illegal immigration and crime associated with illegal immigration will not be tolerated. It is very clear that Cruz’s actions are making him friends within the law enforcement community because they understand that his ideas are innovative and efficient.
