Arizona Republican Franks Announces Unexpected Resignation from Congress!
A strong conservative’s career in Congress has ended because of an allegation related to discussing surrogate motherhood. On Thursday, Trent Franks resigned from Congress. Talk about shocking!
The congressman said he learned the House Ethics Committee was reviewing complaints about discussions he had with two female aides about surrogate motherhood, as reported by the Washington Times.
Rep. Trent Franks, Arizona Republican, announced Thursday that he was resigning from Congress, saying that he didn’t want to go through the way his actions would be distorted and leaked about in the current climate.
He said that he had learned that the House Ethics Committee was reviewing complaints about his discussions with two female aides about surrogate motherhood. Rather than suffer through an investigation, he said, he decided to step down.
“We are in an unusual moment in history – there is a collective focus on a very important problem of justice and sexual impropriety. It is so important that we get this right for everyone, especially for victims,” Franks added.
“But in the midst of this current cultural and media climate, I am deeply convinced I would be unable to complete a fair House Ethics investigation before distorted and sensationalized versions of this story would put me, my family, my staff, and my noble colleagues in the House of Representatives through hyperbolized public excoriation,” he said.
“Rather than allow a sensationalized trial by media damage those things I love most, this morning I notified House leadership that I will be leaving Congress as of January 31st, 2018.”
Franks also told The Times, he never molested or inappropriately touched a female staff member. He has not been publicly accused of any sexual misconduct.
Mr. Franks has NOT been publicly accused of ANY sexual misbehavior.
Franks and his wife have struggled with infertility and had twins through a surrogate. He said that he now understood that his discussions of surrogate motherhood had made the female staffers “uncomfortable.”
“Given the nature of numerous allegations and reports across America in recent weeks, I want to first make one thing completely clear. I have absolutely never physically intimidated, coerced, or had, or attempted to have, any sexual contact with any member of my congressional staff,” he said.
Franks continued, “However, I do want to take full and personal responsibility for the ways I have broached a topic that, unbeknownst to me until very recently, made certain individuals uncomfortable. And so, I want to shed light on how those conversations came about.”
Franks, 60, was first elected to the House in 2002.
Franks is a conservative member of the House Freedom Caucus who has made his crusade against abortion a cornerstone of his career. He is the dean of the Arizona delegation and is serving his eighth term in Washington. Franks is also a member of the House Armed Services and Judiciary committees. He chairs a subcommittee on the Constitution and civil justice and is vice chair of a subcommittee on emerging threats.
The 8th Congressional District, which he represents, is on the northwest side of Phoenix and went for Donald Trump by 21 points in 2016.
According to Politico and other sources, several names have already been mentioned as potential special election candidates, including former Maricopa County Supervisor Clint Hickman, Peoria Mayor Cathy Carlat, state Sen. Debbie Lesko and state Sen. Kimberly Yee and political commentator Floyd Brown.
An Arizona Republican political consultant told The Western Journal, top contenders would be Arizona treasurer and Trump campaign COO Jeff DeWit, Trump campaign 2016 statewide chairman and former state representative Phil Lovas, as well as state senator and Franks congressional staff member Steve Montenegro.
A special election would likely take place in April or May.
If you ask me this STINKS BIG LEAGUE! It makes me wonder if this was just the Democrats or Jeff Flake going after Franks. Franks has been a strong conservative and staunch defender of pro-life. You can’t get much more conservative than Franks, unless you are Ted Cruz. We’re talking about a true and strong conservative that has defended not only pro-life, but the Constitution his entire career.
Something just doesn’t sit right here. Like I said, it reeks like something coming from the swamp – Jeff Flake or the Democrats. Is THIS the ONLY way Democrats can take out Conservatives?
