Ever since Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hit the stage as a darling of socialism on the left, she has made numerous statements that have shown she really does not understand much about real life.
This has given the right much fodder to create memes and discussion about her intelligence.
One such meme, basically stated that she had an IQ less than that of a salamander. SNOPES took it to task!
Snopes decided it was dangerous enough to Democrats to rate an official debunking. They gave the whole meme a rating of ‘mixture’ actually!
The morning after the 2018 U.S. midterm elections on 6 November 2018, the Facebook page “Flyover Culture” posted a meme that supposedly showed some of the “horrible” Democratic Party candidates who had just won their elections:
From left to right, this image graphic shows Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Bob Menendez, Ilhan Omar, and Keith Ellison. While it’s true that all four of these individuals won election during the 2018 midterms, most of the criticisms of them expressed in this meme are subjective or unsubstantiated.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is dumber than a salamander?
While the other three claims in this meme were at least rooted in something from conspiracy theory to news reports, the description of Ocasio-Cortez was nothing more than an ad hominem insult. Out of curiosity, however, we attempted to find the average IQ of a salamander but were unable to unearth any credible studies relating to IQ tests for amphibians.
IQ tests for humans do exist, but it should be noted that they aren’t the best method for measuring intelligence. We weren’t able to find any credible reports about Ocasio-Crotez’ IQ, but it’s reasonable to assume that the youngest woman ever to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives is more intelligent than your average salamander (and possibly most meme makers to boot).
Note that SNOPES gave absolutely no evidence to debunk that Ocasio-Cortez is smarter than a salamander, they just assume!
In reality, Ocasio-Cortez is no dummy. She just has a very naive vision on how life, as well as the US government and economy, works.
But she has surely given her opponents plenty of fodder:
She has had numerous times where she has spoken, or should I say mis-spoken the facts.
Ocasio-Cortez is new to all of this, yes. But the high profile she already enjoys carries with it some responsibility. Namely, to get the facts right. And when you get them wrong, to correct it as quickly as possible rather than trying to justify the error.
When you get lots of facts wrong, people laugh at you. When they laugh at you, they make memes…
And… then you get compared to the IQ of a Salamander! LOL
Of course, the next step is for SNOPES to claim you do not have the IQ of a Salamander!
Ocasio-Cortez has an explanation of why she gets facts incorrect and why she wasn’t really wrong —
“If people want to really blow up one figure here or one word there, I would argue that they’re missing the forest for the trees,” she said to Cooper. “I think that there’s a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right.”
Here’s the thing: Being factually accurate and morally right isn’t an either/or situation. You can do both!
