The Department of Defense has released that there are three more migrant caravans headed to the United States border and one is as large as 12,000.
John Rood, Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, reported the news to the House Armed Services Committee on Tuesday.
“Current information shows that a caravan of over 12,000 people. There’s three that we are tracking, that the DHS is tracking en route. One that is over 12,000 by the latest estimate,” said Rood.
The United States has more than 2,300 active duty troops at the southern border. But that is down from a high of 5,900 in November. The original deployment had more than 5,000 active duty troops sent to assist in protecting the border.
The acting Secretary of Defense ,Patrick Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday there will be an increase of “several thousand” more troops being deployed to the border.
Trump, citing a segment on Fox News’ morning show “Fox & Friends,” warned that three separate caravans are now “marching” to America’s southern border.
“The numbers are tremendous,” he added.

Trump’s tweet came a day after Democrats in the House offered a vague border security plan that would not provide for the wall. He has warned that they’d be wasting their time if they don’t come up with wall money.
However, the Democrat offer Wednesday was just a starting point in House-Senate talks on border security funding. A top Democrat acknowledged that “everything is on the table,” including the border barriers demanded by Trump.
It is speculated that there are almost 60 house Democrats who want all or even part of the barrier that the Border Patrol has requested that Trump is fighting for.
The catalyst for Trump ending the shutdown was the actions of freshman Democrat from Virginia, Elaine Luria. Luria lives in a military district and wrote Pelosi a letter. It was signed by 30 other house Democrats. The letter was basically scolding her for not negotiating.
Important is to note her quote, and that it matched Trump’s address Friday:
“He’s not talking about a wall from sea to shining sea,” Democrat Congresswoman Luria said of the president. “That is not what we are talking about. We are talking about physical barriers as recommended by experts.”
Trump used the EXACT same phrase, “not talking about a wall from sea to shining sea”
The 3 week plan he outlined was Luria’s. It’s in her letter to Pelosi, signed by the 30. Pelosi has been neutered. Many of the signatures are from House members who either wanted to, or voted against Pelosi as Speaker.
Also late last week, a significant number of senior Democrats approached the White House signifying a willingness to negotiate a deal that includes adequate funding for the Wall That group included House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD). They told the President, directly and through channels, that Pelosi had put herself too far out on the ledge to cut a deal. That a deal was possible without her. Not just in the House but the Senate also.
So on that basis, real negotiations toward a serious deal that actually provides proper funding for the Wall, the President decided to give them a three week re-opening of the parts of the government that are closed, so that the affected workers could get paid.
