Hundreds of Memes Mocked Creepy Pelosi-Schumer Last Night. Here’s the Best!
Their rebuttal actually was rather creepy. Pelosi and Schumer’s facial expressions spanned the range of completely blank, robotic and haunting.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer responded to President Trump’s national address on immigration last night.
It did not go well. Pelosi-Schumer both looked defeated and tired. Their message was desperate. But the image they left for the world was their downfall.
I spoke to 5 friends today, including a 40 year comedian. It was almost instinctual that everyone saw American Gothic.
American Gothic is a 1930 painting by Grant Wood in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. you know the paining:
Well, just look at Pelosi-Schumer yourself.
Of course, that inspired this:
Their rebuttal actually was rather creepy. Pelosi and Schumer’s facial expressions spanned the range of completely blank, robotic and haunting. Their rigid stances as they stared down the camera didn’t help either.
In fact, the address came across so bizarrely unhuman that people could only compare them to horror movie characters or Bond villains.
Here’s a collection of some of the best online responses for your enjoyment:

“Who OK’d their lighting and staging? It made them look like if you say their names three times while facing a mirror they’ll appear behind you. It would make anyone look harsh. They went with this optic with all the people they know in Hollywood and the networks? Seriously.”

This was Trump’s first primetime Oval Office speech of his presidency. The President doubled down on calls to fund the border wall to address the “growing humanitarian and security crisis at our southern border.”
Over the course of the nine minute speech, Trump claimed that the ongoing government shutdown is the result of Democrats’ unwillingness to fund border security and accused the party of refusing to “acknowledge the crisis” and provide border agents with the tools they need.
Pelosi-Schumer had a response that crashed and burned.
Trump told human stories.
Pelosi-Schumer complained about process. They accused him of arguing that the women and children at the border were “a security threat” when he had just explained to the American people that they were victims, too.
Trump spoke calmly and rationally from behind the Resolute Desk.
The Democratic leaders accused him of “pounding the table” and having a “temper tantrum.”
They relied on ad-hominem, charging him with using the “backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis. They accused him of creating fear and said he did it to divert attention from the turmoil in his administration.”
Pelosi-Schumer were partisan and petty.
Trump came across as reasonable and even compassionate.
The damaging part of the presentation is the image. The image that will be shared around the world as the butt of jokes.
Every one agrees that President Trump started a little slowly in his address to the nation from the border.
Even a lot of liberals, thought he finished very, very strong.
He closed the deal well, as expected. Trump pleaded on behalf of Americans who have been murdered and otherwise brutalized by illegal immigrants. He trumpeted the fundamental security issue involving drugs and MS-13.
He holds a winning hand: Illegal immigration is a huge problem. It is the number one reason why Trump is president, and the issue is stronger today than it was two years ago. There is a crisis at the Southern border.
I see a lot of opinion all day. Even the bulk of liberals I know believe he at least made points. Decide for yourself.
