Catholic Teens Attending March For Life Rally Accosted By Native American Elder Activist

Teen boys from a Catholic high school in Kentucky faced a social media firestorm after what appeared to be a mocking confrontation between them and Nathan Phillips, a Native American and Vietnam War veteran. This happened at the March for Life rally in Washington, DC this weekend. Let me just say that things are not always as they appear at first blush. I think this is one of those times.

A video of the boys surrounding Phillips caused an immediate outcry on social media. The leftist media, of course, ran with it. It makes it seem as though a mob of these boys surrounded this man to make fun of him. Phillips was there for the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, DC. The boys, however, did not surround him… Phillips accosted the boys while drumming. A selective video makes it appear that the boys mocked and harassed him as he sings the American Indian Movement song on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

The boys could have handled this better and seemed to get a kick out of it but that doesn’t mean they attacked an elderly Native American veteran as even some conservative outlets claim. They should get their facts checked out before accusing these boys like this. One boy did stare down Phillips and smirked while he was doing it. That’s not acceptable behavior and I’m sure he will answer for it. The media made a big deal of some of the boys wearing Make America Great Again hats. This had nothing to do with Trump.

Social media descended into a rabid frenzy over all this. It was pointed out that the boys were from Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Kentucky. It’s an all-male college prep school and they verified the boys were there for the March for Life rally.

As I said before, there is another side to this story. Phillips has claimed racial harassment by students before. Specifically in 2015. He claims that students dressed up as Native Americans accosted him as he was out for a walk. He strikes me as a professional victim. For the march this weekend, he was the one who approached the boys and confronted them, not the other way around.

Phillips stated on Twitter that he wishes the group of young men would put their energy into something more positive, such as making America a better country.

“I heard them saying ‘build that wall, build that wall,'” Phillips said in a Twitter video as tears rolled down his face. “This is indigenous land, you’re not supposed to have walls here. We never did for a millennia…We never had a prison; we always took care of our elders, took care of our children, always provided for them. We taught them right from wrong.” I don’t believe this guy. Spoken like a true Marxist.

PR rules the roost though and the Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School issued the following statement on Saturday:

“We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.

“We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement.”

I guess it is better to assume the boys are guilty than take an unpopular stand against a leftist guy who was looking for a confrontation. Shameful.
