Gov. Jerry Brown: President Donald J. Trump Is ‘Going to War Against California’

California Governor Jerry Brown was incensed after the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against three laws in the state that seek to keep ICE from doing their job. He complained that the Trump administration “is basically going to war against the state of California.” He took direct aim at both President Trump and Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the action.

Sessions is targeting California’s sanctuary laws just as he said he would. The lawsuit focuses on three laws in particular: the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 450), the Inspection and Review of Facilities Housing Federal Detainees law (AB 103); and the California Values Act (SB 54). The Trump administration argues that California’s laws are unconstitutional under the Supremacy Clause, which states that federal law “shall be the supreme Law of the Land.”

Jeff Sessions appeared in Sacramento to give a speech in front of the California Peace Officers Association, who oppose SB 54. In an ironic twist, Sessions compared California’s resistance to federal immigration law to the efforts of the Old South and the Confederacy to resist the Union. It is an apt comparison and wholly appropriate given the circumstances. “There is no nullification. There is no secession. Federal law is ‘the supreme law of the land.’ I would invite any doubters to Gettysburg, and to the graves of John C. Calhoun and Abraham Lincoln,” Sessions said. Very well put.

This caused Jerry Brown to fly into an absolute rage. “This is really unprecedented for the chief law enforcement officer of the United States to come out to California and act more like Fox News than a law enforcement officer. This is a political stunt,” he told reporters, as quoted by The Hill. I disagree. Sessions is deadly serious here, just as President Trump is. California is hiding behind the Tenth Amendment and deliberately misinterpreting it so they don’t have to follow constitutional and federal law here. Trump is threatening to pull ICE out of the state. We should go even further and cut off all funding and pull all federal agencies out of the state. We should also criminally prosecute those who violate federal law. If that doesn’t work, DC should take control of California.

The Obama administration, through Attorney General Eric Holder, challenged an Arizona immigration law on similar grounds to those that Sessions is using to confront California. They prevailed at the Supreme Court and so will Trump and Sessions. The groundwork is being laid here to take major action against California, just as they should. The United States cannot afford to allow a rogue state to pull the rest of the country down with it because they insist on unworkable Marxist policies being implemented.

Even though Obama and the left had previously taken the opposite stance, Brown warned: “This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy. It’s not wise, it’s not right, and it will not stand.” I believe Brown could not be any more wrong than he is on this and that’s saying something. If he pokes this badger, he may find that California experiences what few states in the union have… direct federal intervention.

Brown took an additional swipe at the Trump administration and it was nasty. “We know the Trump administration is full of liars. They’ve pled guilty already to the special counsel.” This is patently untrue. And although similar accusations can certainly be made against Obama’s administration, nothing like this was ever said during that time. If Brown wants a declared war with Trump, he’s doing an excellent job of it.

Parroting California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones, Brown viciously attacked Sessions’ own Southern origins, saying that the Golden State did not need “a fellow from Alabama coming to talk to us about secession and protecting human and civil rights.” He also accused Sessions of conducting a “reign of terror.” Sessions is not a racist and never has been. As for a “reign of terror,” these consequences are self-imposed for deliberatly violating federal law. US House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who represents the “sanctuary city” of San Francisco, chimed in as well, accusing the Trump administration of “brazen aggression and intimidation tactics.” That’s rich since this is a lawsuit and Obama and Holder were the masters of using lawfare while in office.

“California is using every power it has, and some it doesn’t, to frustrate federal law enforcement,” Sessions told the gathering of officers in Sacramento. “So you can be sure I’m going to use every power I have to stop them.” That’s what Sessions’ job is and it is the right thing to do. If war comes to California, they will lose.
