I will never understand why businesses get involved in politics and put off half of their potential customers. You must be quite the superfan to name your gas station “Obama Mart.” What a nice tribute to a president who surely was full of gas. Of all ways to pay homage to your hero, named for a place people stop at to take a leak and buy some Cheetos. The sentiment warms the soul.
Mr. Murad A. Alhanik of Columbia, South Carolina was so happy about Obama’s presidency that he plastered Obama’s name and logo all over his business and he claimed that the gimmick actually worked, bringing in more business. Apparently Mr. Murad saw all that big money coming in and got a little greedy. It’s funny when people start making real money and then suddenly realize in horror how much of THEIR money is actually going straight to the government to be wasted. In that way, I feel his pain. However, you still gotta pay the tax man, Mr. Alhanik.
Shockingly, just because you name your gas station after the president, don’t think that means you get out of things like paying taxes. I know, I know, Obama was supposed to pay off your mortgage, give you a free phone and pay for people’s gas, but shockingly, that never actually happened! No, you weren’t an idiot to believe it, you were a complete idiot to believe it.

The owner of a South Carolina gas station named in honor of former President Barack Obama was arrested and charged Tuesday with tax evasion.
Murad A. Alhanik, 39, the owner of the Obama Store and gas station in Columbia, S.C., was charged with “four counts of sales tax evasion,” WISTV reported.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue said Alhanik filed $971,935 in sales tax returns in the period between 2013 and 2016, but after an investigation the agency found the store’s sales was $2.6 million, according to a press release.
Alhanik dodged paying more than $136,000 in sales taxes during that four-year period, the department said.
Alhanik was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, arrest records show. He could face up to five years in prison and fines nearing $10,000.
The owner renamed the gas station to honor the 44th president during Obama’s first term. Alhanik told WISTV he saw more business after the name change.
“I see more people come in,” Alhanik said then. “Excited with the name.”
In January 2017, Alhanik told the Post and Courier that he would never change the name of the store despite Obama not being president anymore because “it’s still history.”
Apparently Mr. Alhanik thought the tax policy under President Obama was somehow unfair and too high for him. He must be so happy and relieved now that Trump is president and lowering his tax rate! Too bad he’s probably never going to see that point. Obamamania has blinded people from seeing the obvious over and over, and over again.
Though somehow I’m betting some Obama fans will think this poor gas station owner was somehow targeted for his political views. Because, if I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, the rules don’t apply to liberals. It won’t matter that the man skipped out on paying taxes, because taxes should only be paid for by the mega-rich. It won’t matter that he didn’t pay because liberals are great at playing the victim and think that everyone else should pull their weight, but not them. There will always be an excuse for why the rules don’t apply to them. Always.
Hopefully Mr. Alhanik will take his probable prison time to realize that the laws apply to everyone. Yet, I will bet he comes out of this situation a bigger victim. Perhaps we should send him a spreadsheet explaining how his tax situation will be helped by President Trump’s plan and maybe he will rethink the name? Trump’s Mart… anyone?
All I know is, I would rather run out of gas, and walk to the next gas station, if I passed this place. Mr. Alhanik claims this stunt increased business, but that’s a pretty hard claim to prove since he bought the gas station and immediately made it the Obama Mart. I am quite sure many customers drove right on by. But hey, it’s a free country.
