The term “fake news” is thrown around a lot lately. However, when a news story reports implies a possibly impeachable offense that instantly tanks the stock market and causes other widespread implications turns out to be wrong, there ought to be serious consequences.
On Friday, news outlets were frantically reporting updates on that Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to FBI officials about conversations he had with Russia’s Ambassador. The MSM waited for the “smoking gun” to be discovered that would lead to the end of the Trump administration. ABC’s Brian Ross believed he had found it.
Ross reported on air, during a “special report” that it was revealed that then-candidate Trump directed Flynn to contact the Russians. This was untrue. Blatant “fake news.” Were it true, it would have been the bombshell the MSM had been waiting for. They have been salivating for a year waiting to prove some sort of nefarious collusion with Russia, for which there has been zero evidence. There still is zero evidence.
In the time it took ABC to correct the error, the fallout from the alleged “smoking gun” had already started. Almost immediately the stock market reacted, plummeting more than 300 points. The market had been up for the day when the report took place. You see, the economy likes Trump. Were he to fall, there would be massive economic consequences.
In true ABC form, the leftist rejoicing occurred on “The View,” the most liberal talk show around. Joy Behar, the old lady on “The View” was handed a note card with breaking news, her reaction was pure elation as she read the news. It’s worth the watch just so you can imagine how she feels now. Poor Joy, she thought she got an early Christmas gift and now it has been snatched away. Boo hoo.
Thankfully, ABC eventually admitted the “error” in reporting, and Ross is being held accountable, by being given the entire month of December off. Yes, making such a “serious error” has resulted in him taking off the entire holiday season. Sure, it’s without pay, but I’m willing to bet he can handle it. While I’m sure he would rather have not been caught, this punishment sure seems light to me.
The report claimed Donald Trump had directed his eventual National Security Adviser Michael Flynn to contact the Russians while running for president as a candidate.
Ross followed up his reporting later that day with a “clarification,” claiming it was not while Trump was a candidate, but as president-elect.
Statement as follows:We deeply regret and apologize for the serious error we made yesterday. The reporting conveyed by Brian Ross during the special report had not been fully vetted through our editorial standards process. As a result of our continued reporting over the next several hours ultimately we determined the information was wrong and we corrected the mistake on air and online.
It is vital we get the story right and retain the trust we have built with our audience –- these are our core principles. We fell far short of that yesterday. Effective immediately, Brian Ross will be suspended for four weeks without pay.”
This is not the first time Brian Ross has jumped the gun and made erroneous accusations. The little weasel was caught in a despicable mistruth about the Colorado movie theater shooting in 2012. The Daily Wire reports:
However, this is not the first time that Ross has had to apologize for his reporting. In 2012, following the Aurora theater shooting in Colorado, “Ross reported on ABC News that he’d found a web page for a ‘Jim Holmes’ on a Colorado Tea Party site,” Fox News reported.
“There is a Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado, page on the Colorado Tea Party site as well, talking about him joining the Tea Party last year,” Ross reported. “Now we don’t know if this is the same Jim Holmes, but it’s Jim Holmes of Aurora, Colorado.”
ABC News and Ross came under intense criticism for immediately looking to politicize the shooting by suggesting that Holmes was a member of the Tea Party — which he was not.
President Trump wasted no time expressing his feelings about the situation on Twitter, tweeting “Congratulations to @ABC News for suspending Brian Ross for his horrendously inaccurate and dishonest report on the Russia, Russia, Russia Witch Hunt. More Networks and “papers” should do the same with their Fake News!”
I guess it’s good that ABC took action, but four weeks of no pay?! A slap on the wrist for what should result in immediate firing. Brian Ross is a disgrace and shouldn’t be back on air tasked with such an important job.
