He admits it! Sunday Night Football’s Al Michaels — Trump’s Anthem Comments Hurt Ratings

I think by now most of us are all just pretty fed up with the NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. I also think by now the NFL has to be feeling it in their pocketbooks too. The ratings are down. The seats are empty and many Americans have boycotted the NFL games altogether.

In a recent interview, Al Michaels of NBC’s ‘Sunday Night Football’ came clean about the drop in ratings for NFL games.

Speaking to Rob Tornoe, Michaels spent most of his interview discussing the National Anthem protests, which were kicked off by Colin Kaepernick two summers ago. Michaels said that while ‘Sunday Night Football’ is still the most-watched primetime show, their ratings are down 8% from last year but that “two or three years ago, the ratings were so spectacular that there had to be a little bit of a diminishment at some point.”

Ratings were down a bit last year due to the Presidential election, but sprang back to normal after Trump won. The same kind of spring back isn’t going to happen this year, and the ratings difference will continue to grow.

Michaels put most of the blame on the protests undertaken by players “against racial injustice during the national anthem,” saying that it “felt like tension over the protests was staring” to cool down up until Trump brought it up during a rally in Alabama where he “called on NFL owners to fire players” who continued to protest during the Anthem.

He then said that the issue will probably only be solved once it’s the off-season and there’s a chance to keep from overwhelming the conservatives and that both sides will “just have to sit down and figure it out.”

Twitter decided that Al Michaels must be one of those awful “Trump supporters” due to his admission that Trump (and, ya know, millions of others) were correct to say that the reason the NFL is struggling is directly due to the Anthem protest issue. He said that after Trump “made those remarks” it was like “throwing a match into a gas tank.”

But, to be clear, Al Michaels is a Republican and probably one of the very few open Republicans in the sports commentary world.

Recently, Al Michaels had to apologize during his ‘Sunday Night Football’ show after cracking a joke early in the broadcast.

“I mean, let’s face it,” Michaels said, “the Giants are coming off a worse week than Harvey Weinstein.”

Collinsworth guffawed and said, “Only my L.A. guy comes up with that one.” Michaels replied with a chuckle, “All you have to do is read the paper, any paper.”

A few people on Twitter responded:

I truly cannot believe that on  Al Michaels just said “@Giants had a worse week than Harvey Weinstein.” Not funny, just offensive

Al Michaels: “The Giants had a worse week than Harvey Weinstein”

Al Michaels is probably the best play-by-play guy in history. But boy… that was a big, big lapse in judgment.

Al Michaels is what happens when you surround yourself with people that routinely laugh at your bad jokes.

Later in the game, following a commercial break, Michaels told his TV audience, “Sorry I made a reference earlier, I was trying to be a little flip about somebody obviously very much in the news all over the country, and it was not meant in that manner. So, my apologies, and, um, we’ll just leave it at that.”
Collinsworth agreed that it was best to “move on.”
Hey Al! You moron! It wasn’t Trump’s comments that started this whole fiasco. It was one overpaid, talentless quarterback named Colin Kaepernick. When this idiot decided to take a knee, he not only threw politics into sports front and center, but he showed Americans he didn’t have any respect to those currently in the military that defend his freedom of speech in the first place. If Kaepernick wanted to protest, he should have done it on his OWN time, not during a football game that most people used to enjoy watching on a Sunday. If he really wanted to make a real difference, he should have thought about doing something more constructive but instead he started a trend of overpaid NFL athletes disrespecting our nation’s anthem, flag and military by kneeling.
Americans and patriots don’t want anyone kneeling during the national anthem. The only time one should be kneeling should be during prayer. Unfortunately, the NFL didn’t like it when former NFL quarterback Tim Tebow did that, did they?
I guess the NFL doesn’t seem to have a problem with those who kneel during the national anthem, they only have a problem when players kneel during prayer. Sad, but true.
When anyone including NFL players decide to kneel during our national anthem, it’s disrespectful to our military, veterans, flag and national anthem. It’s disrespectful and insulting to all those who serve and have served to protect our freedom. As NFL players continue to kneel during the national anthem, Americans will continue to tune them out. They just don’t get it, but they will when their contracts come due after the drastic drop in ticket sales and empty seats in the stadiums.
