There is incredible infighting at the DNC over how to handle Pro-Life Democrats and the messages coming out of the party are beginning to contradict, all the way to the top!
Opinion on abortion has been shifting in the wrong direction for Democrats since the 90’s and they are in chaos trying to deal with the issue.
A spokeswoman for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee recently said, “There is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates” on abortion rights.
“The DCCC has no interest in working with Democrats for Life of America, despite their attempts,” said DCCC spokeswoman Meredith Kelly.
Her statement totally contradicted her boss, DCCC chairman Rep. Ben Ray Luján, “Every Democrat, like every American, should support a woman’s right to make her own choices about her body and her health,” Perez said, as HuffPost reported. “That is not negotiable and should not change city by city or state by state.”
Kristen Day of Democrats for Life of America said the “lines of communication are open” between her organization and the DCCC.
The contradictions highlight the continued turmoil within the Democratic Party over the issue of how to win back the majority in Congress.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, Susan B. Anthony List president stated, “It is further evidence that Democratic Party leaders are likely stringing pro-lifers along, using them for their votes without intending to back away from their extreme position on abortion.”
Democratic Congressional Campaign Chairman Ben Ray Luja’n made political heads spin when he told a reporter from The Hill “there is not a litmus test for Democratic candidates.”
He went on to say, “As we look at candidates across the country, you need to make sure you have candidates that fit the district that can win in these districts across America.”
“Ignoring women’s fundamental freedoms and equality to win elections is an ethically and politically bankrupt strategy,” tweeted Ilyse Hogue of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Actress Rosie O’Donnell took to Twitter, saying, “Women should form our own party if Dems do this.”
DNC Chairman Tom Perez has also repeatedly stated that the Democratic Party is the pro-choice party.
Back and forth, back and forth!
They have a dilemma because, even among young people, the opinion of the morality of abortion has been swaying in the definite direction of prolife.
Polls since the 80’s show a drastic swing from 56% of the country being Pro-Abortion to today where 55% of Americans Want All or Most Abortions Made Illegal.
As Dr. Susan Berry so aptly states in Breitbart:
In 37 consecutive polls performed throughout the past 21 years on the issue of abortion, Gallup has found that a majority of Americans surveyed say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
Gallup began asking Americans to define themselves as pro-choice or pro-life on abortion in 1995, and since then, identification with the labels has shifted from a wide lead for the pro-choice position in the mid-1990s, to a generally narrower lead for “pro-choice” — from 1998 through 2008 — to a close division between the two positions since 2009.
This has caused many Democrats in conservative areas to take a Pro-life stand and the liberal base is furious! The leadership is in chaos!
Since abortion has proven to be too complicated a topic for the party, other liberals and Democrats have floated around other potential litmus tests. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) proposed single payer health care as a good starting point, while California Gov. Jerry Brown is under the impression they should start listening to the “common man.”
