President Trump and His Jerry Springer Smile

When I was a reporter in the Florida Keys I was very adept at ticking off everyone in the newsroom.  At that point in my life I could not work unless I had a some chaos behind me.  I had little confidence in my writing and could not let myself write a single word unless myself and everyone else was all wound up.

My grammar and spelling skills still lag for someone who calls himself a writer. Just the other day I was looking to write the word, ‘traitor’ and by some strange phonics magic, typed the word trader. I was mocked without mercy.  Grammar Nazi’s stock Facebook night and day trying to make their lonely lives more interesting by taking dyslexics down a peg or two.

I am calmer these days as I seek my peace in Christ, but I see a little of myself in President Donald Trump.

Here is a man new to the most difficult job in the world, and prone to dramatic gestures anyway.  So in order just to get to work, I imagine he wakes up saying not,

“Oh geez I hope people appreciate what I am doing,”

“I am so excited to push any and every human button I can find, so that no one actually pays attention to what I am doing until the results are in.”

His main foil is the media in general and CNN in particular.  The liberal media reaction to President Trump is always the same:

“This is beneath the dignity of the office of the President of the United States of America.” Blah, blah, blah!

I laughed pretty good when Trump tweeted that video of him wrestling the CNN head to the ground. It reminded me of the scene in the movie ‘Austin Powers’ when Dr. Evil and his son, Scott, appear on the ‘Jerry Springer Show’.

Eventually the family dynamics break down and chairs are being thrown and everyone is screaming.  The camera cuts to Springer, who is as calm as can be with this sort of evil genius grin on his face. I imagine President Trump after he posted the wrestling video, kicked back in the Oval Office, hands behind his head, slyly grinning over at Kellyanne Conway who slyly grins back.

Twitter is abuzz today with the news that CNN blackmailed the poor man who was clever enough to come up with the Trump CNN wrestling video.

CNN investigative journalist Andrew Kaczynski posted the following. Notice the last line where Kaczynski threatens to out HanA**holeSolo’s if he does not stay in compliance.

“CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same. CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.”

Very poor journalism indeed. Now I don’t mind humor and a little chaos now and again, but we seem to be distracting ourselves from very real issues including the Korean Peninsula, the national debt, and the environment.

In my neck of the woods the salmon are losing their fight with the Snake River dam system and a frightening amount of mercury is showing up in the fish, do to farm run off heating up the rivers.

Will we see some serious dialogue about real issues or will it be all chaos and drama until the whole system collapses and something new rises from the ashes of our inability to deal with ourselves in any real way?

There is some hope in my mind, as despite the chaos, I was able to execute some decent journalism.

Let’s hope that Trump, despite the early chaos, can effect some positive change in the United States. Tune in to CNN tonight. No wait there is a boycott going on.
