Sen. John McCain was one of only three Republicans to vote against the GOP healthcare plan early Friday morning, and he is being credited with the decisive vote that killed the so-called Obamacare “skinny repeal.”
McCain cast the no vote two days after a dramatic return to the Senate floor after finding out that he is dying of brain cancer.
I refuse to make a joke here out of respect, but I want to. The vote leaves President Trump without a clear path to repeal. It heaps grave doubt on the GOP’s seven-year promise to dismantle ObamaCare.
The President quickly announced a new Plan B: “Let ObamaCare implode.”
McCain voted with fellow Republicans to start debate on Tuesday but warned he was opposed to the current version of their repeal-and-replace legislation.
It was hard to imagine the clean repeal of Obamacare–the 2015 bill–would fail in the House or the Senate, given that most of the GOP members in both chambers have already voted for it.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pushed the skinny bill as a backup proposal after Republicans failed to agree on a bigger bill that repealed and replaced the pillars of ObamaCare or on a repeal-only measure that passed both chambers in 2015.
He appeared almost distraught after McCain’s surprise vote and seemed close to choking up on the floor after falling short of his promise to repeal ObamaCare.
“This is clearly a disappointing moment,” he said.
“I regret that our efforts were simply not enough this time. Now, I imagine many of our colleagues on the other side are celebrating. Probably pretty happy about all this. But the American people are hurting, and they need relief.”
What McCain and a few other RINOs do not get is that the problem with Obamacare was not Obama. It was the federal government sticking it’s nose where it did not belong in the first place.
I stand where I always have…including 8 years ago.
Open state lines. Then walk away. If you need to help the needy… help them and don’t disrupt everyone else’s healthcare to do it. Let the states deal with the rest.
Might as well leave Obamacare because the federal government cannot micromanage and no matter how ‘wonderful’ the program, it will cost more than stated and create more problems than it fixes. At least the Dems own Obamacare.
How repeal turned into repeal and replace is beyond me. Stupid.
If they were to let ME write a replacement, I would not vote for my own bill! The problem lies in the Federal Government being involved in the first place. The most wonderful plan ever would end up in chaos. Until we get the feds out of healthcare, there will always be a mess.
The Republicans were only setting themselves up for a mess down the line. ObamaCare gone and TrumpCare in. Then the Republicans own the problem. I guarantee, there would be problems.
McCain, as always, is an idiot. He is now personally responsible for ObamaCare and the damage it is doing. The goal, of course being, single payer.
McCain will be personally responsible for single payer in the future as well.
