It seems in the last few years, there seems to have been a wave of “political correctness” of liberals to remove historical markers and monuments in many states. Liberals seem to think by removing monuments, they can remove our history.
Recently in Virginia, one Senator actually went against that grain of “political correctness”. His name is Gerald Allen. Sen. Gerald Allen, a Republican, sponsored a the bill to preserve monuments in Alabama. The move comes shortly after New Orleans moved to remove 4 Confederate landmarks of history.
Senator Allen said, “I am concerned about politically-correct efforts to erase entire portions of American history, and oftentimes these efforts to remove a statue or a monument are done in haste and without public knowledge. I believe our children and grandchildren should remember history as it happened – the good and the bad.”
H/T Conservative Tribune:
Just days after New Orleans tried to erase a segment of American history by removing Confederate memorials, Alabama made a move in the opposite direction that will infuriate liberals.
AL.com reported that the Alabama state legislature passed a bill that would preserve such monuments from removal or destruction.
Specifically, the bill “would prohibit the relocation, removal, alteration, renaming, or other disturbance of any architecturally significant building, memorial building, memorial street, or monument” that has stood on public property for 40 or more years, according to the Associated Press.
The bill preserves monuments and historically significant buildings on private property. It would also establish a committee that would determine if monuments would be removed or renamed.
Republican Rep. Mack Butler said monuments should be protected because they represent a segment of our country’s history.
“We don’t need to go back and just tear up the pages of our textbook,” he said. “Are you good with the sanitizing of history as we’re seeing in New Orleans?”
Critics who oppose the bill, like Democrat Sen. Hank Sanders, claim Confederate monuments are oppressive.
“We are not protecting history. We are protecting monuments that represent oppression to a large part of the people in the state of Alabama,” Sanders said, according to the AP.
How about our history? Our liberals going to go to every state and try to remove every statue or monument, because they have a ‘beef’ about something that they feel represents “oppression”? And why THIS year?
Do they really think that by removing monuments they can erase all traces of history?
On Friday, May 19th, the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee became the last of New Orleans’s four contested monuments to go. The monument to General Robert E. Lee was removed from its pedestal in Lee Circle at the heart of the city of New Orleans. Mayor Mitch Landrieu used the event to claim victory for political correctness.
The famous Civil War-era monument of Robert E. Lee was at the center of the city’s most famous traffic circle for more than a century. The statue was put on the chopping block by Landrieu after he began a crusade against four monuments he deemed “symbols of white supremacy.”
Other monuments removed by the Landrieu Administration include the Battle at Liberty Place, Jefferson Davis, and the P.G.T. Beauregard Monuments, Breitbart Texas reported.
All the monuments were removed at some expense to taxpayers, as New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) officials were present at each of the removal processes. The money to physically remove the monuments, though, came from a private donor which Landrieu has refused to disclose to the public.
In an address to the city, Landrieu derided critics of his now infamous monument removal crusade, saying Davis, Beauregard and Lee were not patriots.
“These monuments that we took down were meant to rebrand the history of our city and the ideals of the Confederacy” Landrieu said. “It is self-evident that these men did not fight for the United States of America. They fought against it. They may have been warriors, but in this cause, they were not patriots.”
Landrieu has been widely criticized for his calling for the removal of the historical monuments, with historians asking him to add context to the monuments, rather than removing them altogether.
The grassroots activist group Save Our Circle formed solely in opposition to Landrieu’s actions in regards to the monuments. They say that the monuments represent the city’s history.
The monuments do represent history. This is all about political correctness. What’s next, street signs and gravesites?
I guess liberals like Mayor Landrieu don’t see it that way.
Landrieu added, “The cultural and economic and the spiritual loss to this city for having those statues up that have run people out of the city,” Landrieu claimed. “The great migration that sent some of our best and brightest to places across the country that we don’t have the benefit of has been incredible.”
I highly doubt people are migrating out of the city of New Orleans because of the monuments that bring “oppression” to people. Come on! If anyone is running out of New Orleans it’s because the of the Democrats’ policies like – high taxes, tight gun controls, funding of sanctuary cities, etc.
And how about crime? Maybe we should ask Mayor Landrieu if he thinks maybe increased crime has anything to do with people “fleeing”?
New Orleans had the highest murder rate of any U.S. city with a population of 100,000 or more in 2011 and ranked 28th in the world in 2014.
The state had the highest murder rate per capita among all states in the country last year, a streak the state has maintained every year since 1989, according to new data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Monday (Sept. 26). The state’s high murder rate figured as one of several metrics in data that showed murders throughout the United States jumped by 10.8 percent from 2014 to 2015–the largest percentage increase since 1971.
No….I doubt liberals, like the Mayor of New Orleans would believe any facts. Facts….we dont’ need any stickin’ facts!
Heck no! Just keep removing monuments….that’s right those monuments that you believe are causing everyone to flee out of New Orleans, not the high crime rates or increase in murders. No, it can’t be that, right?
In the meantime, kudos to Alabama! Thank you for preserving history – good or bad, it’s still our history!
