In the least shocking turn of events possible progressive Senator Chuck Schumer of New York announced he will not be voting in favor of the nomination of Supreme Court applicant Neil Gorsuch. Furthermore, that Senate Democrats will filibuster his nomination in an attempt to ensure he is not voted in.
Schumer said the following on the Senate floor this week,
“After careful deliberation, I have concluded that I cannot support Judge Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court. His nomination will have a cloture vote. He will have to earn 60 votes for confirmation. My vote will be no, and I urge my colleagues to do the same.”
The Minority Leader said that should he not get the sixty votes he needs to win the nomination then another Supreme Court nominee will need to be picked. Schumer called upon Gorsuch’s lack of proper answers during his hearing as the reason he would vote against him. Whatever that means. He said,
“Judge Gorsuch was not able to convince me that he would be an independent check on a president who has shown almost no restraint from executive overreach. He was unable to convince me that he would be a mainstream justice who could rule free from the biases of politics and ideology. He is someone who almost instinctively favors the powerful over the weak, corporations over working Americans. There could not be a worse time for someone with those instincts.”
The Senator has long threatened that Democrats would filibuster the Supreme Court nominee. One of the issues he said would etermine whether they chose to do that or not is abortion and the potential overruling of Roe v. Wade. However, during his hearing Gorsuch emphasized that Roe v. Wade is the law of the land as decided by the court.

Planned Parenthood has been adamantly opposed to him while conservatives have favored his conservative ideology as a replacement for deceased justice Antonio Scalia. Senator Robert Casey of Pennsylvania has also announced he will not vote for Gorsuch. Neither will Senator Bernie Sanders. Many Democrats have silently been in favor of his nomination for fear a more conservative judge would be nominated should Gorsuch fail the vote.
Schumer’s comments just go to show how hypocritical he is. Filibustering is what he and Democrats criticized Republicans for doing. Now he’s doing it. Sometimes you just have to pick up your chips and walk away. That time has come for Schumer.
