The White House is a beautiful iconic symbol of our nation’s democracy and is famous world round. On special occasions, the White house is lit up to highlight major events or honor various things. Former President Barack Obama lit up the White House in a rainbow of lights when same-sex marriage was legalized, and not many Americans liked that… but President Donald Trump honored one special cause this weekend and it’s uniting all America.
On Friday, March 30th President Trump made an announcement that he would be honoring World Autism Awareness Day by lighting up the White House blue. He also urged all Americans to learn more about autism to be able to best support people with autism in our communities.
“I invite all Americans to Light it Up Blue, which Melania and I will do at the White House,” President Trump said. “I call upon all Americans to learn more about the signs of autism to improve early diagnosis, understand the challenges faced by those with autism spectrum disorders, and to do what they can to support individuals with autism spectrum disorders and their families.”
“On World Autism Awareness Day, we highlight the importance of addressing the causes and improving the treatments for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). We also recognize the importance of identifying ASDs early in a child’s life and of understanding the obstacles faced by people living on the autism spectrum.” he said.
This cause is personal for Trump. Sean Spicer, White House Press Secretary explained that Trump promised “the late wife of his friend Bob Wright that he would illuminate the White House in blue if he won the election.” Suzanne Wright founded the Autism Speaks advocacy group, which has a blue logo in 2006, the same year she passed away. Autism Speaks is an organization that has been met with controversy, many of the critics are autistic people. They have expressed concern and anger that no actual autistic person is on the board of directors. The Autism Speaks group has been accused of wanting to “cure” autism, as opposed to providing families with autistic family members with support and resources. Videos against Autism speaks organization can be seen on Youtube expressing concern for the negative image they believe Autism Speaks spreads about autistic people. With the controversy around which side to be on with the Austin issue bring more awareness to Autism is a good move on the Trump Administration. This is exactly the sort of thing the White House should be lit up for.
