Down Syndrome Couple MOCKED For Engagement, Look At Them Now 22 Years LATER!

What is true love? True love is what everyone is looking for and for a lucky few they find it. True love defies race, religion, age and even genetic disorders because love overcomes all challenges. Love comes in all shapes and forms, and when you find it, grab on to it and never let it go.

That’s exactly what Tommy Pilling did back in the early 90’s when he found the love of his life. The lovely lady he was smitten with was Maryanne. She was like anyone he had ever met before.

Tommy worked up his courage to ask her out on a date. Maryanne agreed, and the two began dating full time. For 18 months the pair were inseparable. They did everything together and had come to know each other very well. Tommy knew, without a doubt, that she was “The One.”

With his heart set on Maryanne being his wife, Tommy asked her mother for permission to marry her; Maryanne’s mom was overcome with happiness. She never thought this day would come and now that it had, it with was filled with joy. You see, Maryanne is not your typical bride to be, she has Down syndrome and so does Tommy. In the face of many people criticizing the family to allow the marriage to take place, Tommy and Maryanne were wed 1995 in England. They are considered to be one of the first couples with Down syndrome to walk down the aisle. Those that criticized the union thought that a person with Down syndrome didn’t have the capacity to have a romantic relationship, but they were wrong.

Maryann’s sister, Lindi Newman, told news outlet TODAY that the family knew that Tommy and Maryanne’s love was real and could last. “Anyone should have the right to marry the love of their life without prejudice or discrimination.”, Newman said.

The happy couple certainly have proved all of the doubters wrong. They just celebrated 22 years of wedded bliss and seem as happy as ever. Looks like true love can overcome all challenges. The couple shared a few secrets to their marital success with the TODAY: “Always be honest, make time for each other, and always have respect for each other.”

A huge congratulations to Tommy and Maryanne on their 22nd wedding anniversary. Thank you for setting an example of what true love is all about, Here’s to many more years of love.
