I realize there was a recent full moon, but this was at least the THIRD major crime event that happened today – two which involved bombs in New York and New Jersey, and the third involved a mass stabbing in Minnesota.
UPDATE: As of Sunday morning, we know from witnesses that the attacker made references to “Allah” and asked victims if they were Muslim. We also know that a wing of ISIS is claiming responsibility of this attack.
The first event happened this morning. There were three bombs found in New Jersey and terrorism is suspected. They were targeting Marines and their families Saturday morning at a Seaside Semper Five Marine Corps 5K Charity. One bomb exploded and two didn’t go off, but they were set to go off at the time of the charity race. How sick is that? The suspects have not been found yet, but they were trying to kill innocent American soldiers! Do you really need to ask if this was terrorism? Of course it was! Today America celebrated Constitution Day! Need I say more.
The second event involved two bombs in Manhattan that recently went off and which involved at least at this point, 29 people injured. The explosion happened around 8:30pm on West 23rd Street. A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that the FBI’s joint terrorism task force was responding and that investigators did not believe the incident was due to a gas leak. The official was not authorized to discuss an ongoing investigation and requested anonymity.
The NYPD Counterterrorism Unit and the Fire Department were on scene investigating what caused the explosion in or near a dumpster. Again, do you really need to question whether this was terrorism? What other idiots would set bombs in a public area where innocent people could be killed on Constitution Day?
Police and FDNY units also responded to reports of a possible second explosive device, a pressure cooker found on 27th St., between 6th and 7th Aves., just before 11 p.m., officials said.
The third crazy event that happened today was a mass stabbing incident in St. Cloud, Minnesota’s Crossroads Mall, where police have confirmed multiple injuries. The suspect, police say, is dead, though they have not provided more information.
Udate 11:07 AM ET: From the Associated Press. The Islamic State has claimed responsibility:
An Islamic State-run news agency claims the man who stabbed and wounded eight people at a mall in Minnesota before being shot dead by an off-duty police officer was a “soldier of the Islamic State.”
The IS-run Rasd news agency reported the claim on Sunday, saying the attacker had heeded calls from the extremist group for attacks in countries that are part of a U.S.-led anti-IS coalition.
It was not immediately clear if the extremist group had planned the attack or even knew about it beforehand. IS has encouraged so-called “lone wolf” attacks. It has also claimed past attacks that are not believed to have been planned by its central leadership.
All eight victims from Saturday’s attack were treated at a hospital for wounds that weren’t life-threatening and all but one were later released.
Update 12:33 AM ET: Video uploaded to YouTube by Hannah Kosloski appears to show the developing situation within the Crossroads mall. Police have begun to allow people to leave in an orderly fashion, demanding identification to chronicle every person who was in the mall at the time of the attack.
Update 12:12 AM ET: ABC affiliate KSTP reports that at least eight people were injured in the attack; the St. Cloud Times notes that one of those eight was admitted to the hospital, while the rest sustained “non-life threatening injuries.” Video from outside the mall during the ongoing attack has now surfaced on social media:
The incident appears to have begun sometime between 8:20 and 9PM local time, according to various local news reports. The St. Cloud Times reports that the mall has been walled off by a “major police presence,” and that multiple people have been stabbed. While the police confirmed that they believe the suspect is dead, though they are following other leads on potential accomplices, they have not indicated the condition of those injured.
“Unofficial reports from the scene say there may be multiple gunshot and stabbing victims,” the Times reports.
Local NBC affiliate KARE 11 has posted some photos of the mall and confirmed that the suspect is dead.
The earlier story on the stabbing at the Crossroads Center Mall in St. Cloud Minnesota reported by the AP:
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (AP) — At least eight people were taken to a hospital with injuries after a stabbing attack at a Minnesota shopping mall on Saturday evening which ended with the suspected attacker dead inside the mall.
St. Cloud Hospital Communications Specialist Chris Nelson told the St. Cloud Times that of the eight people brought there, seven had injuries that were not life-threatening. No further details were released.
Police Sgt. Jason Burke said the mall remains on lockdown.
Harley and Tama Exsted of Isle, Minnesota, who were in St. Cloud to watch their son play in a college golf tournament, were in the mall when the incident occurred.
“All of a sudden I heard pop pop pop,” Harley Exsted told the St. Cloud Times. “I thought someone tipped over a shelf. All of a sudden these people started running. I just saw everybody running our way.”
There also were reports of some shots fired during the attack.
The couple were unharmed and said they helped another woman who was running from the scene to her car.
