The upcoming Rio Olympics have been hampered by a barrage of items, most recently human body parts being washed upon the shore near the Olympic beach volleyball venue.
Police are also attempting to recapture a drug trafficker who escaped from a Brazilian hospital. That has led to over a week of deadly gun-battles in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
The fear of the Zika virus has some contestants to withdraw from the Olympics!
USA Today reports on other issues that are dogging the Summer Olympics:
“Other violence is also causing worries about safety during the Olympics. Last weekend, an off-duty bodyguard for Rio’s mayor was shot to death in an apparent mugging and a doctor was slain in her car on a main expressway. Earlier this month, members of the Australian Paralympic team were mugged at gunpoint.
Officials have warned that budget shortfalls may compromise security.
An estimated 85,000 police officers and soldiers will be patrolling the streets during the Olympics and Paralympics, but Rio de Janeiro state’s acting governor says the state is still waiting for 2.9 billion Brazilian reals ($860 million) from the federal government that is earmarked for security efforts.
“The financial aspect is the big problem of Rio’s public safety strategy,” said Andrei Rodrigues, a top security official at the Justice Ministry who is responsible for big events.”
It seems there are always complications that give the hosts of the Olympic games major headaches. World events, threats of terrorism, logistics… but this years games in RIO seem to not be getting any kind of break!
Many are beginning to call for the the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio to be postponed, moved, or both, for precautionary reasons.
But … you cannot sanitize the world of it’s problems.
Just like the mail! :”Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” The mail must get through!
Just like Broadway!: “The show must go on!”
The games must begin!! And they will!
The good thing is, Audgust and September are during the dry season…mosquitoes will be few and far between!
