For the first time in 27 years, the Urbana police department has used the flag desecration statute to arrest 22 year old Bryton Mellott for burning the American Flag.
He posted pictures of the American Flag burning and the department received numerous complaints.
The Illinois man was charged and booked into the Campaign County Jail at about 10 a.m. Monday.
Lone Star Liberty reports:
The calls prompted the Urbana Police Department to investigate Mellott’s Facebook page, where he had posted photos of him burning an American Flag along with the following commentary.
“I am not proud to be an American. In this moment, being proud of my country is to ignore the atrocities committed against people of color, people living in poverty, people who identify as women, and against my own queer community on a daily basis,” Mellott wrote on Facebook in a post.
Mellott’s Facebook page also included the name of his employer, which created a problem, Charles added.
“The free speech that he was exhibiting, while it was distasteful to some, free speech is free speech,” Charles told me. “It’s when you say things that are inciteful and make it clear that you are associated with someone that doesn’t share your ideas; it got raised to a level where a reasonable person there would fear for their safety. It’s similar to yelling fire in a movie theater.”
Besides being inciteful, a step way above free speech, Mellott misses the fact that this great country that he lives in provides him the ability to have such nice things such as the device he used to create this problem for himself!
America has never been perfect. It has it’s shameful moments. But when you place it next to any other country, during any other time in history, it stands alone in freedom and liberty! That American Flag stands for that freedom as well.
He discusses poverty. Our poorest of poor are a part of the top 10% of wealth in the world. We have unsurpassed standards of living for even the poorest.
He discusses treatment of the gay community. Many places in the world behead and kill for homosexuality.
He points to the treatment of the black community. Well in one name: Frederick Douglass!
Frederick Douglass was a true hurdle jumper. Born into slavery and lost his mom at 6. He self educated himself, borrowing the slave-owner’s children’s books.
He died a wealthy man with the ear of Presidents. He was an incredible writer and a business owner,
He did not need quotas or government assistance. All he needed was the knowledge that he could do anything he set his mind to!
Frederick Douglass is an incredible example to all of us.
Bryton Mellott should do some traveling to the plethora of places in the world that the USA has helped so much, and that live a definite different standard.
He should listen to my good friend Trade!
