HoloPortation is the latest type of 3D capture technology that allows high-quality 3D models of people or objects to be reconstructed, compressed and transmitted anywhere in the world in real time!
We now have the first look at Microsoft’s HoloPortation technology. Virtual reality has come a long way!
Basically HoloPortation means you can position people from different places in the same room as real-time 3D holograms and record the entire scene to create a living memory.
Take a look at the incredible video:
This HoloPortation video posted on I3D’s YouTube channel shows two members of Microsoft’s research team virtually teleporting between locations and interacting in real time from two different places.
“This technology allows users to see, hear, and interact with remote participants in 3D as if they are actually present in the same physical space. Communicating and interacting with remote users becomes as natural as face-to-face communication,” the Microsoft Team posted on the project website.
Just like Star Trek!!
Think about it! You and your friends, sitting in your living room, interacting! The difference? Your friends are actually in many places around the world.
Your friends are actually at home wearing a HoloLens.
The the HoloPortation system can be recorded so afterward, you can play back the whole scene as a 3D hologram! It can also be miniaturized for playback anywhere!
Of course, HoloPortation requires a lot of expensive technology so it will most likely be a time before we get to use it.
The HoloPortation room needs several banks of 3D cameras as well as a lot of software and computing power to create a 3D hologram.
That data then has to be compressed and sent to the other location for someone wearing a HoloLens.
Everyone would have to be wearing a HoloLens to be able to see each other, otherwise they just hear audio like the child in the video.
Oculus Rift is another form of the Virtual Reality HoloPortation. Most experts are saying the technology is still 15 years out to being enjoyed by the masses. I can’t wait!
