A new gun designed to look just like a cell phone is making headlines and it is not even on the market yet!
Ideal Conceal, is getting a lot of attention for its double-barrel .380-caliber handgun.
The gun is about 3 inches by 5 inches, the same size as a Galaxy S7 phone with a protective case on it.
CEO Kirk Kjellberg said that he came up with the idea for the gun while carrying his own concealed gun at a restaurant:
“I walked towards the restroom and a little child, a boy about 7, saw me and said, ‘Mommy, mommy, that guy’s gotta gun,‘” he said. “The whole restaurant of course turns and stares at you and I thought, ‘There’s just gotta be something better to do than this.‘”
Kjellberg, who calls himself a “serial inventor,” began to design a gun that was not so obvious.
The website notes that the gun is designed to look like a smartphone — “so your new pistol will easily blend in with today’s environment.”
Kjellberg says the prototype will be done this summer and will begin manufacturing around October.
He said there has been plenty of interest, including from law enforcement.
The gun will be sold for $395.
Since marketing for the gun began, Kjellberg admits he’s seen a range of feedback, including concerns raised about those who might be carrying a weapon indistinguishable from a cell phone.
Critics argue the gun could pose a security threat at airports and other places.
Kjellberg denies that.
“It’s kind of an erroneous idea that this is any different from any other pistol, because when you run it through an x-ray, it has barrels and triggers and hammers — all the things other guns have. It has enough metal in it that it can’t escape the metal detector,” he said.
“We don’t want anything sinister to go on with it either,” he said about the gun, “it’s just made for mainstream America, not criminal enterprise.”
