Two children were so scared of their father’s, Jason Behrens’, drunk driving that they reported him from the backseat of the car by texting to 911.
They discussed the frightening moment last month when their father took them on a ride in his vehicle while he was drunk.
“We don’t want to go anymore, because you are drunk and I don’t want to die!” they had told him.
The siblings said this wasn’t the first time. But their mother, Amy Brooks, said this was the first time the kids had been scared enough to make an emergency text.
“‘The next time he swerves, send the text,’” Ethan remembered telling Mackenzie.
“And he swerved again, so I pushed send,” she said.
The text sent police on a hunt to find the rental car they were in before they made it onto the interstate.
The kids describe almost hitting another car head-on. They continued to beg their father to pull over.
“He’s like, ‘I’m not drunk,’” Ethan said. “And then he kept on driving, and that’s when the point where I got really, really scared and I just started praying a lot.”
“Yeah, a lot,” Mackenzie said.
The kids said it was their idea to pull over at a Burger King to stop and get something to eat. That’s when the cops caught up with them.
There was alcohol in her father’s cup and Jason Behrens blew nearly three times the legal limit of alcohol.
Their mother was overwhelmed when she learned of the drunk driving incident.
“I was very angry, but it was kind of a bittersweet moment, to where the better part is that they are safe now, that I came and picked them up,” Brooks said. “The other part is that finally people will know and maybe listen to me.”
Behrens was charged with a DUI and two counts of drunk driving with minors in a vehicle.
Drunk Driving is premeditated. There is NEVER an excuse, ESPECIALLY with your children in the car. I hope the penalties are severe!
This young lady died as a result of drunk driving. While the impact she has made since is huge, she died.
Jason Behrens, you could have very easily killed your children.
