Christmas Spirit Is Alive And Well!

Christmas spirit is definitely alive and well this year, despite all the negativity we see in the headlines. I’m talking specifically about what’s going on at Walmart. Anonymous donors have been paying off hundreds of thousands of dollars in layaway balances.

According to an article on Cleveland, Ohio’s, a mystery donor there has paid more than $106,000 in layaways at two northeast Ohio Walmart stores. Managers at the stores make it clear this donor wishes to remain anonymous. Steelyard Commons in Cleveland had the biggest layaway collection with nearly $70,000 in goods and Lorain had about $36,000. Items ranged from a pair of socks to 70-inch televisions — and tons and tons of toys.

“It made me happy because I know a lot of customers walked out of the store or are coming in the store very positively impacted by it,” said Beverly Vargo, store manager of the Lorain Walmart.

Walmart has officially responded with this statement, “Christmas is a time of year when many people go above and beyond to give back to their neighbors and communities. When customers anonymously pay off others’ layaway items we’re reminded of the amazing things people will do to support each other. We’re proud to be a small part of these random acts of kindness.”

Something similar has happened at Walmarts in Swatara and Silver Spring Township in Pennsylvania. A man in that area, known as Santa B, paid off around $180,000 in layaway items at the two stores. The same donor paid off $50,000 last year at the Silver Spring Township Walmart.

In an article on, Steven Myers, manager of the Silver Spring store, said, “He just said his business was successful and he wanted to give back to the community,” Myers said. “I don’t know why he picked our store.” Because of his donation, between 300 and 400 layaways have been completely paid for.

Lake City and Chiefland, FL, are getting the Layaway Santa treatment, too. An anonymous donor paid off $100,000 worth of layway at Walmarts in each town.

Maybe you can’t pay off an entire Walmart store’s layaway account…or maybe you can! Whatever you’re capable of, do what you can to spread the spirit of the season. Merry Christmas!
