Senate Democrats Block 20-Week Abortion Ban Bill!
Pope Francis has been an incredible voice for religious liberty, life, marriage. On the same day that the Barack Obama welcome Pope Francis to America, the Senate Democrats blocked a bill that would ban abortions from being conducted on fetuses after 20 weeks of gestation, at a time that the fetus can feel pain.
On Tuesday, Senate Democrats blocked a GOP measure to prohibit most late-term abortions. The Senate voted 54-42 to move ahead on the legislation, but that fell six votes short of the 60 needed to crack a filibuster mostly led by Democrats.
Democratic Sens. Robert Casey, Jr. (Pa.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.), who all oppose abortion rights, joined Republicans in voting to advance the bill. Republican Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Mark Kirk (Ill.), who support abortion rights, voted against it.
While today’s bill did not address federal funding for Planned Parenthood, supporters say it would have put the United States in line with the majority of the world when it comes to abortion policies.
“We’re one of seven nations in the entire world that allow abortion on demand at 20 weeks, the fifth month of the pregnancy,” Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from South Carolina who is also running for president said on the Senate floor, “I’d like to get us out of that club.”
Want to guess what those other seven countries that allow abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy are? They are: Canada, the Netherlands, Singapore, China, North Korea, and Vietnam. Nice group to be in, don’t you think? Democrats thinks so.
Following the vote, Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, said:
“This is when unborn children can react, even recoil, to stimuli an adult would recognize as painful,” McConnell said. “This is when doctors even administer fetal anesthesia during surgery…So even if we differ on the larger abortion issue, can’t we at least agree that children at this late stage of development deserve our protection?”
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, called the vote a “waste of time”.
This fight is far from over. The debate will continue this week.
From USA Today:
McConnell moved Tuesday to schedule votes on two bills passed by the House on Friday. One would bar federal funding for Planned Parenthood. The other would protect babies that survive attempted abortion.
“Every senator who voted against this legislation is telling the public loud and clear that he supports the barbaric, horrific practice of tearing limb from torso and poisoning to death five-month, seven-month, and even eight-month-old babies in the womb,” said Lila Rose, the President and Founder of Live Action.
In the words of Pope Francis, visiting the nation’s capital this week, ‘The level of progress in a society is measured by its capacity to safeguard life, above all in its most fragile stages.’
Thanks to Senate Democrats and President Obama, our level of progress is regressing. Pretty sick that these people have no concern for the life in the wombs, these tiny fetuses feeling pain. What do you say we do some simulations on them, next time they block these bills. Too bad these Democrats and our president don’t have the same respect for life that the Pope does.
