The family of Kate Steinle slapped federal officials and San Francisco Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi with a lawsuit on Tuesday.
They say that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the sheriff must take responsibility for their daughter’s July 1 death, after the man charged with her murder along a popular waterfront had been deported five times.
“We’re here to make sure that a change is made so nobody has to endure the pain that my mom and dad and I go through on a daily basis,” Brad Steinle, Kate’s brother, said Tuesday, ABC News reported. “The system failed our sister, and at this point nobody has taken responsibility, accountability. And nothing has changed.”
Juan Francisco Lopez Sanchez, 45, has pleaded not guilty to Steinle’s killing. His criminal record also includes multiple felony convictions for narcotics charges.
“It’s too late for us, that ship has sailed. But we want it for future, possible victims,” Liz Sullivan, Kate’s mother, told a local ABC affiliate.
ICE had turned Sanchez over to San Francisco authorities earlier in the year due to an outstanding drug warrant, but he was not returned upon his release from custody. The gun used to kill Steinle was stolen from a BLM agent’s car on June 27.
San Francisco is one of a number of “sanctuary cities” across the U.S. that does not pressure its local officials to abide by federal immigration laws; San Francisco adopted “sanctuary” policies.
Despite a 1996 federal law [the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA )] that requires local governments to cooperate with Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), many large urban cities (and some small) have adopted so-called “sanctuary” policies. Generally, sanctuary policies instruct city employees not to notify the federal government of the presence of illegal aliens living in their communities. The policies also end the distinction between legal resident aliens and illegal aliens–so illegal aliens often benefit from taxpayer funded government services and programs too.
Federal immigration officials had asked the San Francisco sheriff to notify them once Lopez-Sanchez was released. But San Francisco is one of more than 200 jurisdictions nationwide that ignores those requests, believing they are unconstitutional and foster mistrust between immigrant communities and police.
I can’t imagine being Kate Steinle’s mother, Kate. As a mother, I would be devastated from this maniac who was deported FIVE times and STILL returned to San Francisco to murder my child. What a senseless and meaningless crime! Still, Kate and her family move forward for justice. Our government and San Francisco’s policies screwed Kate’s family. Now the family will have an uphill battle in fighting for what is right – justice.
On the other side, this guy, Sanchez is an idiot! I mean if someone deports you, it means you should NOT be in that country nor are you wanted there, because you are an ILLEGAL! But come on! This killer, Sanchez, was deported FIVE TIMES! Wouldn’t you have stopped after at least the third time? Or he just figured, our system was SO screwed up, what the heck, I’ll give it another shot!
That should tell you something is wrong with the process and the system! For San Francisco to IGNORE requests, how stupid is that? Because of their stupidity, a bright, young woman with a great future ahead of her died at the hands of an illegal immigrant, who was supposed to have been deported! Thank you San Francisco!
I would be amiss if I didn’t thank ICE as well, for turning over the victim instead of deporting him, and BLM for allowing this idiot to get access to a gun! But, most importantly, I’d like to thank Obama for making it possible for “sanctuary cities” to even exist in the first place!
Thank goodness there is hope on the horizon. Earlier at the time of the killing, presidential candidate, Sen. Ted Cruz stated:
“It doesn’t make any sense for our cities to be harboring violent criminals,…and it doesn’t make sense for the federal government to be releasing violent criminals.”
Cruz, along with conservative Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., filed an amendment to the Every Child Achieves Act that would redirect federal funding from more than 200 sanctuary cities to state governments, according to The Hill. The bill is bipartisan rewrite of the George W. Bush-era No Child Left Behind Act with support from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and the immigration amendment could ruin Democratic support for the bill.
Let’s pray that we get a new conservative president elected before Obama has destroyed America with his many laws of insanity including “sanctuary cities”.
