You Can Mock Anyone On Halloween.. Except a Confused Bruce Jenner

Costume company, Spirit Halloween is under fire after a costume gets torn to shreds on social media. The Spirit Halloween is facing serious backlash after offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume in time for Halloween.

The costume recreates Jenner’s look when she debuted as a woman on the cover of Vanity Fair in June, complete with shorts, a padded top, a wig, and a sash that reads, “Call Me Caitlyn.”

Twitter blew up with expressions of anger about the costume, with some calling it “disgraceful,” “hurtful,” and “transphobic.”

Here are some reactions on Twitter:

. Halloween costume: Mocking the community is degrading, disrespectful & harmful. We are humans, not jokes.

There’s a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume, and it’s not okay. Tell @SpiritHalloween to stop cashing in on bigotry:

TW for transmisogyny! I just saw an ad for a Caitlyn Jenner Halloween costume and I hate this planet!!

The struggle that Caitlyn Jenner has to face isn’t a Halloween costume. Whoever made this is a shitty person.

Now, come on! You have to admit the “Call Me Caitlyn” costume is entertaining. I wouldn’t wear it, but I can think of a few guys that would. Halloween is entertaining and fun! Lighten up! Halloween is about costumes, fun, dressing up and parties!

…….But there’s more! The outrage went beyond Twitter!

Spokespeople for transgender people condemned the costume as unfunny, contemptuous and mean.

There’s no tasteful way to ‘celebrate’ Caitlyn Jenner or respect transgender people this way on the one night of the year when people use their most twisted imaginations to pretend to be villains and monsters,” said Vincent Villano, spokesman for the National Center for Transgender Equality in Washington.

The people at GLAAD, which monitors gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans images in the media, weren’t happy either.

“When transgender women step out into the world as their authentic selves, they aren’t wearing a costume,” said a spokesman, Nick Adams. “Companies should think twice before seeking to profit from mocking trans women.”

A spokesperson for Spirit Halloween had this to say:

Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes,” said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. “We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that.”

The retailer offers several celebrity costumes including Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, KISS band members and Marilyn Monroe.

Personally, I agree with Vincent Villano on one thought – There is NO tasteful way to celebrate Caitlyn Jenner.  As for Nick Adams, yes, I agree transgender women/men step out in the world every day, but how are they authentic? Authentic means “of undisputed origin”. How is Bruce Jenner of “undisputed origin” or even “genuine”? He changed his sexual orientation from a man to a woman. We are not disputing that he was a man. We are disputing that he changed into a woman. We do dispute the gender! Some will continue to say Caitlyn is still “Bruce”. Some will say “he’s” Caitlyn. That whole process happened! It’s real! Any psychiatrist with a ‘right’ mind would say – Bruce  or Caitlyn – has issues that are much deeper than a Halloween costume.

On another note, we live in America, until someone tells me otherwise. That means capitalism. That means freedom. I have to disagree with Lisa Barr from Spirit Halloween. Caitlyn Jenner is NO hero! She may be a celebrity, but definitely NO hero. Heroes are soldiers. Soldiers are those who have fought and some even died, for our freedom and our ability to wear to costumes on Halloween – whether it be Caitlyn Jenner or Walter White! Yet, I still consider Bruce not brave, not bold, and not heroic. Freakish yes!  “Call Me Caitlyn”
