Jonathan Gruber is an academic from MIT. He holds a PhD and teaches Economics. He’s also the guy who designed and oversaw the writing of ObamaCare, meaning that even though Nancy “We have to pass it to find out what’s in it” Pelosi said she didn’t know what was in the law, Jonathan Gruber most certainly did.
That’s why it was shocking to some, not to us, when this first video was revealed this week.
According to The Daily Caller, “…the video appears to be from a lecture Gruber gave at Washington University in St. Louis in October of last year, entitled ‘Cost of Health Care.'” It’s important to note again that Gruber is an academic. He lectures for a living, and a lecture in a university setting is pretty much “home” to him. More on this point in a minute.
Again, what Gruber said at Washington University is this: ObamaCare passed because “the American people are too stupid to understand the difference.” Friends, that is exactly what Barack Obama and his Democratic Party think of you.
Needless to say, Gruber has taken some heat from people like us. He’s taken no heat from ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, the NYT, or the WaPo. They’re either silent or defending him.
Megyn Kelly featured this story last night and ran a clip of Gruber walking back his “stupid” remark.
“The comments in the video were made at an academic conference,” Gruber said. “I was speaking off the cuff and I basically spoke inappropriately and I regret having made those comments.”
Farrow then argued on Gruber’s behalf that Gruber’s argument was more “nuanced” than people can even appreciate.
The comments were made at an academic conference and he was speaking off the cuff. We happen to work at a university. We are in daily contact with academics, academic conferences, and academic arguments. If there’s one thing we’ll say about academics, they don’t speak “off the cuff.” Certainly an academic of Gruber’s prominence does not speak “off the cuff.” Academics think through their arguments. They look at every word and make sure it’s the right word, designed to convey exactly the message they want to convey. They do that because they are speaking other academics and academics are famous for tearing every word in a paper or lecture limb from limb. They are taught to be precise, that’s what becoming a PhD is all about.
Jonathan Gruber meant every syllable of what he said when he said the American people are stupid. Not only is that his opinion, but it’s the opinion of his boss, Barack Obama. Gruber was hand picked by Obama. His “stupid” remark wasn’t made “off the cuff,” it was designed not only to reflect his thinking but the thinking of the Obama administration from top to bottom. The remark also wasn’t made in isolation, John Kerry was part of the discussion and even dumb John didn’t make any attempt to argue Gruber’s point.
We’ve got two more years of these insufferable bastards. Actually 26 more months. We hope the Republic can survive.
