Camille Cosby, wife of 50 years to comedian Bill Cosby, has been a kind of hero to me over the years. So, to have her compared to Hillary Clinton because she is ‘standing by her cheating husband’ makes me throw up a little in my mouth.
I know very little about Camille Cosby. That’s part of why I’ve admired her. She has sculpted a life without much scuttlebutt in the media. . .
. . . .because she has not engaged in drama, nor promoted a race agenda, nor flaunted her beauty, nor pushed her parenting philosophies. She has not become the face of L’Oreal or Este Lauder, although she possesses model quality looks.
Instead she raised five children and earned a master’s degree . . . and then a doctorate. In that order. Five kids, then back to school while the kids were still at home, in her mid-thirties. She pursued higher education in addition to motherhood. She returned to university despite already having monetary security. She is Dr. Camille Cosby first, Mrs. Bill Cosby second, in my opinion.
During a rare interview with Oprah Winphrey in 2000, Dr. Camille Cosby shared her motive for returning to school.
“I became keenly aware of myself in my mid-thirties. I went through a transition. I decided to go back to school, because I had dropped out of college to marry Bill when I was 19. I had five children, and I decided to go back. I didn’t feel fulfilled educationally. I dropped out of school at the end of my sophomore year. So I went back, and when I did, my self-esteem grew. I got my master’s, then decided to get my doctoral degree. Education helped me to come out of myself.”
When asked why she wasn’t content to just settle for being the wife of a famous entertainer she continued:
“I don’t know exactly what it was, except that for me, integrity is important. For me friendships are important, family is important, and it is a blessing if we can have monetary benefits. That’s wonderful, and I love it. But I have to have the security of people who really care about me, and me about them. I want to be surrounded by people who have integrity. And, of course, my name is Camille, not Bill.”
I believe she has been the unsullied, well educated, confident and independent neck that turns the head of the Cosby empire. I believe whole heartedly that she, with clenched teeth, ordered Bill out of bed when he was reluctant to get up and feed their brood breakfast. I believe that she scowled at him upon discovering he had given them chocolate cake for said breakfast.
I believe they have an understanding. I do not believe she is covering for a criminal rapist who drugged his targets. And, most importantly, I do not believe she is anything like Hillary Clinton.
