Snack Police on the Move

The snack police are at it again! Burlington Elementary School in Cincinnati, Ohio has rid the students of those evil, life threatening, time wasting Birthday Cakes… as well as ice cream, cupcakes and any other food when a child has a classroom party!

By Scott Osborn

But no worries! Non-food treats like pencils, erasers, bookmarks are still allowed. Oh that sounds fun!! When does the madness end? When do enough people rise up and stop the insanity!

snackThe only thing more obnoxious than the policy itself is the reasoning given to enact such nonsense!

Valerie Bailey, a PTA parent of a son that goes to Burlington Elementary, is on the committee that helped craft the policy. She told

“Parents say it’s not fair. But we hope it sends a message to the parents and kids, especially with the obesity rate being so high, and puts a bug in their ear.”

Send a message??? What in the world is going on?

With almost 1 in 4 graduating seniors unable to read at the most basic level, how are they finding the time to worry about “Sending a message”? I don’t think that the taxpayers and parents ever consented to hiring the schools as propagandists. It is not the job of the schools to send a message. It is the job of the schools to teach the skills that children need to succeed! It is the job of the schools to teach reading and writing, math and science, history and geography.

food-policeThe other reason given was that party foods took lots of time to pass out and clean up.

Seriously? Amazing that when I was in school, it took about 10 minutes at the end of the day to clean up after a birthday party.

Schoolkids must be getting real slow these days. Maybe if they did not waste half the year preparing for standardized tests, they would have more time for a quick cleanup.

It is high time that we stopped this insanity. Let teachers be teachers and let kids be kids. We need to stand up and stop letting the small minority continue to effect changes that are turning our schools into little politically correct jails.

We stood by quietly while many schools removed recess, are we going to let them remove birthday parties too?

We created the greatest nation the world has ever seen with our school system and we did it Birthday Cake and Ice Cream in the classroom. Imagine that!
