Joan Rivers may rub a lot of people the wrong way with her raw wit on the red carpet, and in her role as fashion police in the Hollywood precinct. Some may even have the bad manners to secretly wish for the scalpel to slip in hopes of shutting her up when she undergoes surgery on her vocal cords. Not us.
Joan Rivers may even be the comedienne we all hate to love, but she is sort of an American icon, without equal elsewhere in the world. And, like the Energizer Bunny, she just keeps on ticking. Here’s to hoping she makes it out of the coma and back to the studio via the operating room.

Joan Rivers has been placed in a medically induced coma by doctors as her family anxiously waits by her bedside after she stopped breathing during a routine medical procedure in Manhattan.
The 81-year-old comic’s daughter has asked friends to ‘please pray’ for her mother after she was rushed from an Upper East Side clinic to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition on Thursday morning.
A picture of health only yesterday at a press event in New York City, doctors will attempt to bring the star out of the coma over the weekend and assess her condition then.
Worryingly for Rivers, who was having surgery on her vocal cords, doctors have said they do not know how long her brain was starved of oxygen after she went into either cardiac or respiratory arrest just after 9am on Thursday.
After daughter, Melissa Rivers arrived at the hospital on Thursday night, she released a statement saying her sick mother was ‘resting comfortably.’
‘I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother,’ Melissa Rivers said in a statement.
‘She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.’
According to another E! source, Rivers ‘had a lot of energy’ and was ‘cracking jokes’ at a Wednesday event in New York to promote her new book.
Shira Blum, an online project manager, said she appeared healthy, practically jogging when she walked in to take her seat.
‘She seemed totally healthy,’ Blum said. ‘She was very energetic, hilarious, funny. And it was such a shock, a surprise to hear the news this morning.’
Rivers took questions and said she wakes up every morning and ‘is thankful that everything works,’ Blum said.
Similarly on Tuesday, she gave no hint about needed surgery as she taped a special 90 minute edition of her show Fashion Police which aired on E! that same night.
Covering both the Emmy Awards and the MTV VMA’s the veteran comedienne’s voice did sound raspy but she has become known for her gravelly voice and biting tongue.
The 81-year-old also recently took part in the ASL ice Bucket Challenge not once but three times after celebrities Anne Hathaway, Sarah Jessica Parker and Tara Reid nominated her.
