The 17th District of Pennsylvania includes all of Schuylkill County and parts of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton counties. The Partisan Voter Index (PVI) is D+4. For 20 years pro-life Blue Dog Democrat Tim Holden had represented this district, and then in 2012 Scranton attorney Matt Cartwright attacked him for voting against the Affordable Care Act and won the Democrat primary and the general election. Schuylkill County could regain its congressman in November, but this time a Republican Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III.
Doc Moylan lives in Schuylkill County, and in 2011 he defeated incumbent Democrat Joseph E. Lipsett to become county coroner. In the May 20 GOP primary Moylan, who works as the Simon Kramer Institute of Therapeutic Oncology’s medical director in addition to his duties as coroner, defeated Northampton County opponents Matt Connolly, a real estate investor who also does freelance work in the automobile racing industry, and Matthew Dietz, a pilot for LR Services, Allentown. Moylan had the least amount of money of the three.
Dr. David Moylan – known simply as “Doc” to the scores of people in the anthracite region whose life he’s touched with warmth and tenderness has been in practice in Schuylkill and Carbon Counties since 1986 and his practice has been fully accredited by the American College of Radiation Oncology since 2007.
Schuylkill County is located in northeastern Pennsylvania’s Coal Region. It is located just north of the Lehigh Valley and Reading metropolitan areas. the Republican Party has been historically dominant in Schuylkill County politics. In 2011, the GOP reclaimed the county government. Right now, with the way the district is gerrymandered, it’s projected as ‘Safe Democrat.’ Don’t be surprised if the coal workers vote in great enough numbers to elect Doc Moyan this fall to the US House. Below are some quotes from Doc Moylan.
I believe the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, should be repealed for several reasons, including upholding the right to life. I don’t think it’s right for us. It’s a job-killer. This is driving a wedge between the doctors and the patients.
I don’t think Mr. Cartwright is in tune with the values of Northeastern Pennsylvania, and Schuylkill County in particular. He’s very liberal in his policies. He’s a foot soldier in the war against coal. There’s a war on coal. Just below our feet, there is tons of coal under New Philadelphia … We should be able to learn how to burn coal safely and put jobs back in the area.
We must fully tap into our rich abundance of coal, oil and natural gas, including the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, which will not only break our dependence on foreign energy but also create tens of thousands of good-paying jobs.
We need to secure that southern border. I think we have to seal all our borders. My daughter lives in Tucson and I fear for her. Let’s seal that border and then we’ll talk further immigration reform. The Border Patrol needs additional support, including from the military, in order to do that job.
I support the upcoming investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya, in which U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed. What were the results of the autopsies? How did they die? I would want a full investigation. We have to speak softly and carry a big stick. We should have been more forceful.
In the Middle East, our country needs to back Israel, especially against Iran. The Israelis are our allies. We need to stand side by side … maybe get out of their way.
The federal government should delegate to the states all the responsibilities it has usurped in violation of the 10th Amendment.
We must restore our founding tradition of term limits. When they’re not in session, they don’t get paid.
