Gay people, lend Evander Holyfield your ear – the former heavyweight champ has some startling news about your, uh, orientation. As reported by TMZ and Fox Sports, Holyfield stated on the UK version of Big Brother that being gay is like being handicapped and can be cured by a doctor.
Much like when the champ had his chewed off ear sewn back on, Holyfield believes that being gay is a condition that a doctor can fix.
Here’s the report from Fox Sports:
Former heavyweight champ Evander Holyfield’s first week on UK Celebrity Big Brother is off to a controversial start.
Talking to a housemate over the weekend, Holyfield was seen on camera saying that being homosexual was akin to being handicapped — because a doctor can fix either condition.
The housemate, reality star Luisa Zissman, obviously disagrees and tries to talk sense into Holyfield, but he continues to try to make his case — although it’s hard to understand what points he is trying to make.
Afterward, the show’s producers take him into a private room and chide him for his views, saying that while it may be his personal opinion, it is not a view shared by the majority of society and it would be offensive for him to continue expressing those views.
Holyfield, an evangelical Christian, said he didn’t feel he’d done anything wrong, but that he would refrain in the future.
Unless the warnings go in one ear and out the other – and that’s not too difficult, given Holyfield’s precarious situation with his ears – he’ll stay on the show for now, unlike the situation with Phil Robertson of “Duck Dynasty,” but I have a feeling we haven’t heard the last of Evander’s Evangelism on the subject..
.. Of course that depends on what kind of ratings boost they get from it.
Meanwhile, Boy George slammed slammed his Celebrity Big Brother housemate Evander Holyfield for claiming being gay “ain’t normal”.
The openly gay Culture Club star, 52, hit out on Twitter after the former undisputed heavyweight world boxing champion likened homosexuality to a handicap. Boy tweeted; “Shame, I had such admiration for Mr Evander Holyfield, he seemed dignified and I was sure he was a cool, smart, giant!”
The Karma Chameleon hitmaker, himself a former amateur boxer, later wrote: “I think anyone visiting this country for any reason should be cautioned and forced to swear allegiance to ‘Queens & country!!,” before adding: “At customs there should be a huge sign!
“Welcome to Britain, racism, sexism, homophobia and bad hair are not tolerated!”
We have no idea if this will blow up like the Duck Dynasty story did or if Holyfield will continue with any rants about homosexuality in future episodes. I guarantee you this – if ratings begin to soar, there are sure to be more slurs ahead.
