Ted Cruz – Cream of the Freshman Crop

0 139

The first session of the 113th Congress is finished, and now is a good time to look at the performance of the freshmen Republicans. There are only 4 in the US Senate, and 36 in the US House. The performance is based on what Heritage Action Scorecard calls key votes. This is not about the amount of legislation that passed, and it’s not about how well or poorly a member bloviates on TV political shows. As Joe the Plumber says, it’s not Right vs Left but Right vs Wrong.

Another way to look at the freshmen is to separate the citizen legislators from the career politician legislators. The citizen legislators never served in their state senate, assembly, or legislature. They either worked in the private sector primarily or were appointed to public service or elected to executive positions. When this breakdown is made, we see that 17 of the 25 citizen legislators voted right, and only 9 of the 15 career politician legislators voted right. Each candidate needs to be judged individually, however a general rule of thumb is that about 2 of 3 citizen legislators truly represent their voters and only 3 of 5 career politician legislators do not cave to pressure from the DC establishment.

After only serving for one year it should be obvious to anyone paying any attention that Sen. Ted Cruz is the cream of the crop. He is the only freshman member with a Heritage Action Score of 100%. Below are lists of freshmen and their scores. If your Senator or Rep. is a freshman you’ll be able to decide whether you’re pleased or displeased with their performance. You can learn about all the members’ performance scores at the Heritage Action website.
