Congressman Darrell Issa of California’s 49th District is known as one of the most powerful members of Congress. As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, he has fought hard against “politics as usual” to bring transparency to federal government and ensure justice is served in any case. He held the controversial hearings on the Fast and Furious gun-running program that resulted in the death of a US Border Patrol Officer, and took former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to task over “Benghazi-gate.” To say that he’s tough is an understatement – he is undoubtedly one of the most prolific and respected members of congress, and has taken on many powerful politicians in pursuit of justice. But a side that most Americans haven’t been fortunate to see is the lighter, more gentle side of Congressman Issa. Apparently the Honorable Representative from California is not all about taking down corrupt officials or demanding the truth after major scandals, he’s also all about kittens, puppies, french fries, and Throwback Thursday posts.
While other powerful politicians are tweeting infographics about how much the government wastes, or posting excessively photoshopped photos of themselves in lieu of plastic surgery (I’m thinking of another member of congress from CA… and the name rhymes with “delosi”), Congressman Issa has been sharing kitten memes. Issa’s Instagram account gives the public a better idea of who exactly Congressman Issa is, what kind of food he likes, what he does on a daily basis and most importantly, what his favorite kittens look like.
In the current political climate, with congressional favorability equal to root canals and communicable diseases, Congressman Issa’s candid shots give the American people a way to realize that he’s a lot like them, and his Instagram account has become a way for him to get his message out to his constituents when the 3 second soundbite on the nightly news just won’t do.
So without further ado, here’s a look at Congressman Issa’s life, as told by Instagram (and kittens, of course). This is why Congressman Issa wins the internet.
