Samuel Adams Beer Ejects God from the Declaration of Independence

Last week, while patriotic Americans celebrated the 237th birthday of our nation’s founding, Samuel Adams Beer commemorated Independence Day by brazenly undermining the very documents upon which our nation was founded.

A television ad, which ran over the Fourth of July weekend, depicts an eighteenth century tavern barkeep citing the Declaration of Independence saying:

“All men are created equal. They are endowed with certain unalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

It didn’t take long for Samuel Adams’ Facebook page and Twitter feed to light up with protests from Americans who noticed the small but very significant omission of “by their Creator,” from the beer company’s rendition of the Declaration.

In response to a heated email that I swiftly sent off to the Vice President of Marketing at Samuel Adams, I received this response:

Thank you for your message about our recent TV ad and our use of some words from the Declaration of Independence, without the phrase “by our Creator.” We apologize that the omission offended you. That was never our intent. As you may already know, we adhere to an advertising code, established by the Beer Institute – a beer industry trade organization. The code states, “Beer advertising and marketing materials should not include religion or religious themes.” We agree with that, and follow those guidelines in our advertising and responsibly marketing our products.
Michelle Sullivan
Senior Director of External Relations
Boston Beer Company

Apparently we are to accept the fact that the industry guidelines set by the Beer Industry trump the principles set forth in America’s founding documents? You know, those same founding documents that helped create the free market environment under which Samuel Adams Beer can enterprise and thrive.

It seems that Samuel Adams Relations Executive wants to dismiss this “adherence to guidelines” as a trivial matter. But for those Americans who have been watching the slow and steady devolution of our individual rights by an ever-expanding government, this omission is not insignificant.

If Samuel Adams Beer is going to market and sell beer evoking the name of perhaps our most religious founding father, then maybe they should brush up on their American History.

In the meantime, I penned this response to Ms. Sullivan:

Dear Ms. Sullivan,
Thank you for your prompt response. It’s unfortunate that Samuel Adams Beer and the Beer Industry categorize the Declaration of Independence as a “religious” document. Out of respect for the policies set forth by the Beer Industry, I can no longer in good conscience purchase your product. You see, the currency I use clearly states “in God we trust,” which is an overt violation of your industry standards.

Why do people cast our Constitution and Bill of rights as God-supporting, when everything in these documents cry,”NO!” Nowhere does the Bill of Rights or the Constitution mention supporting “God”. Over the years supposedly well-meaning people have subverted the Pledge of Allegiance (1954) and also caused our money and other documents to carry “God” references in direct opposition to the intent of our founding fathers who used the generic term “creator” to avoid using any such specific reference.

Sam Adams has done nothing wrong. They did edit text, which is done all the time. They did not add anything, nor did they alter the intent. “God” was never in the text, so it could not have been edited out.

America is not a “Christian” nation, it is multicultured, having a mixture of many religious groups as well as non-religious people.

Drink your beer and look for real problems. Sam Adams is not your enemy.

Actually America IS a Christian nation, founded by CHRISTIANS. Many of the brave people who came here & built this nation did so to escape religious persecution & our FIRST AMENDEMENT PROTECTS our RIGHT to FREEDOM OF RELIGION.

Now sashay back to MSNBC where your ill informed, pointless drivel is accepted.

      1. Barry Blough says

Read the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and Then try to apply freedom of religion to others. It does not apply to Christians only is all I’m saying. It is not a Christian manifesto even though I know you want it to be.

Such a shame. Sam was my favorite beverage for many years now. To lose me over a marketing ploy is foolish of them. Oh well, there are many more micro breweries in the United States with great products in competition for my patronage. Onward to the competition I go.

Why is this so shocking or even surprising? Samuel Adams Beer is merely showing their true colours as the promoter of something wicked and sinful. This is par for the course for a company that is part of one of the most evil industries in the history of man: the alcohol industry. Nothing good has ever come from the consumption of alcohol in any form by any one. Not one person has ever benefited spiritually from drinking. “Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging; and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.” (Proverbs 20:1) In other words, God makes it clear that drinkers are fools. There’s a good reason why it’s always been known as “devil alcohol”, and why liquor stores refer to alcohol as “spirits”. It is indeed an EVIL spirit, bringing heartache, tragedy, destruction, and death upon countless individuals and families, as well as society as a whole. I am glad that the beer industry doesn’t want to include God in what they do. They are hypocritical enough with the disclaimers they have in their commercials telling people to “drink responsibly”. The only way to be responsible when it comes to alcohol is to not drink at all, to be a “T-teetotaler” and totally abstain from ALL forms of alcohol, including beer, wine, coolers, and hard liquor. To all those who seek to justify drinking, God warns that “drunkards…shall not inherit the kingdom of God:” (1 Corinthians 6:9&10) And for all those “sipping saints” who see no conflict with having even an occasional beer or glass of wine and the negative effect that has on your testimony for Christ, keep in mind that God says that “it is not for kings to drink wine” (Proverbs 31:4); and the one who “hath washed us from our sins in his own blood”, that is, the Lord Jesus Christ; he also “hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father” (Revelation 1:5&6). If you’re saved, live like it: as a king and priest of the most High God; as one whose life is guided by the word of God, not the opinion of “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:3&4). No one who is “filled with [controlled and led by] the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18) drinks any alcohol; nor do they support or justify that evil industry at all! Instead, they will take a stand publicly against them! Period! End of story!

    1. CapNCraigAgain says

Well, gee whiz! I suppose you won’t be needing to change labels here, will you now.

I’m not going to condemn you for your outright rage against drinkers of any lot, but will ask you, as an expert on all things righteous, why did Jesus turn water into wine at the wedding? If wine wasn’t allowed by Jesus, why make it at all? He could have turned the water into grape juice, apple juice, camel milk or coconut milk for that matter.

      1. paintinc56 says

The Bible says not to drink to drunkenness, a glass of wine or a beer does not get a person drunk.

It is sad to realize that Americans no longer know who they are, therefore they are impotent to stand up and protect freedom when it is obvious that is what they should be doing. Especially companies. The Declaration of Independence is not a religious document, it is an historical document explaining why we separated from England. An historical document!!!! Additionally, everyone is falling for the deception surrounding ‘separation of church and state.’ (which is no where in the Constitution). The first Amendment to our Constitution prohibits the federal government establishing a national religion. It is not a prohibition on private citizens!! The first amendment protects speech and religious expression of the people! Following those ‘guidelines’ has made you a lapdog in my opinion; as a citizen your first obligation is to preserve and protect the Constitution. What are you doing? Your company is named after Sam Adams! Why? Do you even know what his name implies? I agree with a previous poster who said it is time to dump Sam Adams beer into the Boston Harbor. My family members drink Sam Adams and I am starting today on a campaign to persuade them to choose another beer brand that hopefully is a truly American Company. Do we have to start getting our beer from a foreign country in order to do business with a pro-American company like we have to with our media. We found out about the NSA scandal, not from American media but from British media. Geeze, what’s going on now…..are we turning to Britain now to find truth and support liberty?

  7. Jimmy Sanders says

That is a grave mistake. I will not drink another Samuel Adams beer. I will remind other drinkers of the beer how hey stand. I think that the American people will not drink this beer. It will not be available at any national American holiday. Shame on you.

Sam Adams has requested that his name be taken off this product as it is offensive to his beliefs and those of his fellow Patriots. Keep giving away freedoms and beliefs that you have had no hand in establishing and you will learn the fate of a Godless society.
